World champion Sebastian Vettel has been hindered of tying a unique performance of six wins in seven races when Jenson Button won the Montreal Grand Prix in an epic which lasted more than four hours. The German slipped on the wet track in the last lap, allowing the Briton to win the race in four hours, four minutes and 39,537 seconds, though he had been among the last at one point.
Vettel dominated the entire race which included five abandons, including Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who crashed out with 34 laps remaining, although the Spaniard’s car didn’t seem to look seriously damaged. Finally, the German came second with a 2,709 second-gap, while his team-mate Mark Webber arrived third with a 13,828 second-gap. With a couple of laps left, the radio told the Button ‘you can win the race’, and so he did. A small mistake cost Vettel the first position which could have brought him a unique record for season start wins.
Former world champion, Michael Schumacher, who had managed to go second at one point, finished fourth, 14,219 seconds behind the leader, while his team-mate Nico Rosberg, who had come fastest in the practice, arrived 11th with a 50,454 second-gap. Renault finished fifth through Vitaly Petrov who set a 20,395 second-gap, being followed by Felipe Massa who had a strong finish. Kamui Kobayashi came seventh putting Sauber into points, while Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari came eighth, 35,964 seconds behind the Briton. Finally, the tenth place was taken by Sebastian Buemi who will also receive one point.
De la Rosa, who replaced Sergio Perez at Sauber, set a reasonable 12th position, but he won’t receive any point. Five drivers finished with a one-lap gap, including Hispania’s Liuzzi and Karthikeyan, Virgin’s Jerome d’Ambrosio and Glock and Lotus’s Trulli.
Force Inda’s di Resta came three laps behind the leader, while Maldonado and Adrian Sutil abandoned with nine and 21 laps remaining respectively. Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton crashed out after 28 and seven laps respectively, the latter one being involved in a crash with his team-mate and eventually winner Button.
Said Button: “I don’t know what to say – if I hadn’t won I would still have enjoyed the race immensely, but it was a fantastic win,” while Vettel could only blame himself for the childish late mistake. “If you have it in your hands and give it away it is not the sweetest feeling,” said the German. McLaren’s principal Martin Whitmarsh looked stunned by the Briton’s late comeback, claiming that “Coming through six times from 21st is incredible. He just attacked and attacked and delivered a fantastic race.”
Vettel remains though top in the standings with 161 points, 60 ahead of Sunday’s winner Button. Webber has gone third with 94 points, while Lewis Hamilton has dropped fourth with 85 points. Alonso follows him with 69 points. Felipe Massa, who has won eight points in Montreal, goes sixth with 32 points, while Petrov, who has received ten points, has climbed seventh, sitting just one point behind the Brazilian.
Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg, who haven’t won any point in Canada, are eighth and ninth respectively, while Michael Schumacher has gone tenth with 26 points after receiving ten on Sunday. The European Grand Prix follows the Canadian event and is scheduled to take pace on June 26 in Valencia, Spain.
