Russia secure Euro 2012 spot
Russia have guaranteed their Euro 2012 spot with ease after thwarting minnow Andorra 6-0 last night at the Luzhniki stadium where the hosts scored the first four goals within the first term.
Dzagoev, who opened the score early in the meeting, finished the game with a double, while Ignashevich and Pavlyuchenko made things look clear as possible at the half time. Glushakov scored the fist goal for the hosts and Bilyaletdinov closed the match with a sixth one just minutes before the final whistle.
As expected, Russia had a strong start which brought them an early corner following a pretty dangerous shot blocked by the visitors’ defence. Arsenal midfielder Arshasvin delivered the corner which Andorra cleared poorly, allowing Dzagoev to strike it home from 12 yards through dozens of players.
Four minutes later, the hosts earned yet another corner taken by the same Arshavin whose cross was struck wide by Glushakov. Tottenham Hotspur cornerstone Pavyluchenko missed a couple of chances in the 15th minute, the goal becoming just a matter of time for the midfielder. Ignasevic doubled the lead in the 25th minute after Russia won a free kick outside the box.
Arshavin delivered the cross inside the box around the six yard box and Ignasevic headed it home over the exited keeper. Semshov also tried his luck one minute later but the midfielder saw his shot missing the target. Pavlyuchenko made it 3-0 in the 30th minute following a superb play on the right which saw the Russians passing the ball across the face of the box.
Spurs’ star was then picked inside the box to beat both his mark and the keeper from a pretty tight angle. Andorra’s first chance came late in the 33rd minute through Pujol whose shot missed the target. Dzagoev had his shot blocked two minutes later before giving away a free kick. The same Pujol took the responsibility for the set piece which went wide.
Moreno missed another good opportunity for the visitors in the 38th minute but his finish was saved by a unbusy Malafeev. The same Moreno tried his luck with a shot from distance but the scoreboard remained unchanged. With one minute left in the first part Dzagoev completed his double following a lovely combination on the edge of the box the finish of which saw the striker volley it home into the right hand post from ten yards or so past the keeper.
Pujol was the first to pick a yellow card in the 45th minute for a foul. Andorra started the second half with a free kick taken by Moreno who missed the target yet again. On the other side, Russia made it 5-0 in the 60th minute through Glushakov who beat the keeper with a superb header from eight yards following a perfect cross from the right.
Both Pavlyuchenko and Ildefons were shown yellow card in the 62nd minute for sins. One minute later Glushakov and Shishkin had their shots blocked as Russia were chasing for more. Andorra made the first change in the 70th minute introducing Silva for Gomez, while the hosts also replaced two players three minutes later. Dick Advocaat replaced Semshov and Pavlyuchenko with Bilyaletdinov and Pograbnyak respectively.
Just three minutes after being introduced, Silva conceded a yellow card for a foul on the halfway. Russia also picked another one in the 75th minute through Denisov for a trip on Peppe. Just ten minutes after entering the pitch, Bilyaletdinov got his first effort on goal which the keeper saved.
But five minutes later he would not miss the target. Bilyaletdinov was played 20 yards out only to thunder a superb low shot into the left hand corner for a 6-0 lead. Both sides then made another change. Andorra replaced Peppe with Lorenzo, while Russia introduced Samedov for Glushakov.
Jesus Alvarez made a third move in the 75th minute, sending Juli Sanchez in for Pujol. Russia won and finished the stage with 23 points, having Republic of Ireland just behind them with 21 points and a play off spot secured. Andorra are foot of the table with zero points.
Armenia finished third with 17 points, Slovakia fourth with 15 points and Macedonia fifth with eight points. Said Advocaat of his public image: “I’ve never paid any attention to what the press say or write about me. I’ve been in this job long enough not to worry about it. I’m not here to please you or anybody else. The team’s results are the only thing that really matters to me.”
