Top seed Samantha Stosur has reached the Osaka quarter finals after easing past host Misaki Doi in two sets, 6-2, 6-4. The Aussie will next meet Chanelle Scheepers who follows a three set win over Yaroslava Shvedova.
Stosur, winner of this year’s US Open Grand Slam, took the first lead after breaking the Japanese three times in the opener. The Aussie also conceded a service amid the term but that did not hinder her of going four games atop and win the round. Concerning the second set, it was controlled by the same favorite who grabbed a couple of more breaks to seal the victory in one hour and 22 minutes.
The Aussie finished the game with a 65 first serve percentage, five aces, two double faults a 52 return percentage and a 67 service one. As for Doi, her showing included a 59 first serve percentage, two aces, a double fault and a 33 receiving percentage. She also converted two out of four break points and only saved two.
Stosur’s next opponent Chanelle Scheepers edged Yaroslava Shvedova in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. The South African had a slow start which saw her concede three services and break her opponent just twice. The Kazak thus took the first lead to suggest an easy win. But against the first term way, Cheepers came from behind in the second set to break her opponent four times for a three game lead.
She also conceded a couple of services which did not trouble her in the end. Finally, the last set saw the two exchanged four breaks, two apiece, and go head to head until the tie break. Chanelle won the breaker at the death 7-5 to close the meeting after two hours and 20 minutes.
Scheepers finished the game with a 60 first serve percentage, two aces, eight double faults, a 51 return percentage and a 53 service one. She also converted half of her 16 break points and won 103 points out of 198 played. As for the Kazak, Shvedova’s showing included a 65 first serve percentage, four double faults, two aces and a 47 return percentage.
The head to head series between the two has now gone 2-2 with Shvedova’s last win dating from the 2010 Pattaya City tournament.
On the second half of the draw, Marion Bartoli thwarted Vnia King in two easy sets, 6-1, 6-2, needing just one hour and ten minutes to advance through. The French, who is seeded second in Osaka, broke her opponent twice in the opener and a couple of more times in the last term when she also kept the sheet clean on her service.
Overall, Bartoli came up with a 49 first serve percentage, six aces, four double faults, a 53 return percentage and a 72 service one. She converted at the same time four out of six break points, compared to her opponent whose showing included a 55 first serve percentage, an ace, a double fault and a poor 28 return percentage.
Bartoli will next meet host Ayumi Morita who ousted Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-2, 6-3. The crowd favorite broke her opponent three times in the first set as she looked as favorite from the very beginning. As for the last set, it was controlled by the same Morita who grabbed two more breaks for a three game lead.
Daniilidou could only convert one out of five break points in the second set, conceding the victory in nearly two hours. Morita came up with a 69 first serve percentage, an ace, a 55 return percentage and a 60 service one. She also converted five out of eight break points and saved nine break points.
On the other side, Daniilidou was dragged down by a poor return efficiency as the Greek won just 29 receiving points out of 72 played.
Third seed Angelique Kerber has also reached the quarter final when the German ousted Olga Govortsova 6-1, 6-3. Kerber, who ha not shined too bright this year, broke the Belarusian twice in the first round and four more times in the last one when she also conceded the only two services. The German grabbed the win in one hour and 16 minutes to go 4-1 in the head to head series with the world number 140.
Kerber’s showing featured a 52 first serve percentage, an ace, three double faults, a 55 return percentage and a 59 service one. she also converted six out of eight break points and won 66 points out of 116 played, compared to Olga who came up with a 45 first serve percentage, six double faults, an ace and a 41 return percentage.
Next up for the German is Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand who eliminated Mathilde Johansson of France in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, needing nearly one hour and a half to advance through the best eight term. Tanasugarn picked two breaks in the opener and a couple of more ones in the second round when she also faced a midway scare which saw the French steal a service.
Overall, the Thai won 61 percent of first serve points, hit two aces and committed a double fault. She also won 47 percent of return points and converted four out of nine break points, compared to her opponent whose performance included a 51 first serve percentage, an ace, five double faults and a poor 29 receiving percentage.
