Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are still in talks on Lassana Diarra’s move to White Hart Lane, Londoners’ manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed.
The 26-year-old is thus likely to part with Jose Mourinho’s side after just two years. Diarra, who is no longer part of Special One’s future plans is also expected to make the return to Premier League. The Frenchman had spent four years in Premiership before being brought on Santiago Bernabeu from Portsmouth.
Diarra has entered in Redknapp’s radar after Chelsea made an offer for their midfielder Luka Modric, which might leave the White Hart Lane in difficulty. The Spurs manager has revealed the English are interested in the former Chelsea midfielder’s service, claiming that “I like him. It’s a possibility. (The chairman’s) been trying for us. He’s been trying to do something there.”
Real Madrid paid 20 million pounds for Diarra back in 2009 and might pocket the same amount from the North Londoners. The defensive player scored just one goal in 68 games with Jose Mourinho’s side with which he won the Spanish Cup. Unfortunately, he was not selected in the squad for the Supercup two days ago.
Diarra’s international career includes 28 selections, while his club experience two FA Cups won with Portsmouth and Chelsea as well as a League Cup grabbed with the same Blues. He was also named as Chelsea Player of the Year in the 2005-2006 season. If he signs Spurs, Tottenham will become his sixth side, having also played for Arsenal and Le Havre.
Apart from Diarra’s move, Spurs are also interested in Emmanuel Adebayor’s services. The Manchester City player, who still expects to be given a full time job by Real Madrid where he spent the last six months as loan, has now plenty of chances to play within the Premiership as Jose Mourinho’s side have not made a clear offer towards the Eastlands.
Redknapp, who led his side through the UEFA Champions League quarter finals last term, is now interested in strengthening his squad for the next season’s Europa League. Tottenham finished the season fifth and have already made a step towards the group stage when the English side thwarted Hearts 5-0 last night in Scotland.
Tottenham have not made their debut in the Premiership yet, being expected to play Manchester United on Monday. Their debut will also include a tough game against Manchester City whom Redknapp’s side meet in the second day.
