Cincinnati semi finals where the American will face fourth seed Andy Murray.
Fish needed nearly one hour and a half to oust the Spaniard who converted zero of his four break points. Seventh seed and this term’s Atlanta winner Mardy broke Nadal twice, winning at the same time 73 percent of service points and 41 percent on return, compared to his opponent whose showing included a 59 service percentage and a poor 27 one on returning points.
Also, Fish hit 12 aces past Nadal who had arrived in Cincinnati to defend his title. Next up for Fish is Murray who has made an easy progress after easing past tenth favorite Gilles Simon in two smilar sets 6-3, 6-3. The Scott, who has only won a title this season at the Queens, broke the Frenchman four times in 11 tries, conceding just one service in the opener.
Murray, who fired eight aces past his opponent, won 64 percent of service points, 48 of return ones and only committed a couple of double faults, while Simon finished the game with a 52 service percentage, a 36 return one and a poor 47 first serve percentage which cost him several deficits.
Said Murray of his next challenge, Fish: “He’s played his best tennis the last year or so. If you look at his game, it hasn’t changed a whole lot. It’s just confidence of winning matches and understanding how to play his game most effectively. He’s in good shape. He’s been very, very consistent, which maybe he wasn’t in the past. “
The head to head result between world number seven and Murray is a very tight one as Fish has defeated Murray four times in their seven meetings, his last victory coming at the same Cincinnati event last year. Murray, who has lost all the three past clashes, last beat the American at the Queens event back in 2009.
Fish had previously defeated Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-5, and Nikolay Davydenko 6-0, 6-2, having made the progress with the sheet clean. On the other side, Murray has started his American adventure with a 6-4, 6-1 easy win over David Nalbandian and a 6-2, 7-5 one against Alex Bogomolov, and will start the tomorrow’s meeting as favorite in front of the crowd favorite.
The same day, former world number one and third favorite Roger Federer was ousted by Tomas Berdych who beat the Swiss in straight sets 6-2, 7-6. The two exchanged 21 aces, 11 of which hit by Roger who was unable to break his opponent. The Czech provided a solid game, winning 75 percent of service points and 42 on Roger’s, leaving with two break points and 77 winners.
As for the 30-year-old Federer, he could only win 58 percent of service points and 25 on return, conceding the victor in nearly one hour and a half. The head to head series between the two have now gone 9-4 to Federer whose last win over the world number nine comes from the 2010 Toronto Masters.
Berdych had previously defeated Nicolas Almagro 6-2, 6-2 and Juan Monaco 7-6, 6-0 in the second round. Federer had also followed big wins over Juan Martin Del Potro whom he had defeated in straight sets in his debut and against James Blake.
Next up for the Czech is either world number one Novak Djokovic or Gael Monfils. Nole, who has only lost one game so far this season, crashed Radek Stepanek in two sets -3, 6-3 after breaking the Czech six times in 12 tries. The Serb won 61 percent of service points and 57 on return, finishing the fame with three aces and just one double fault.
On the other side, Stepanek won 43 percent of service points and 39 of return ones, converting at the same time three of four break point chances, insufficient though to stay in touch with the victory. Djokovic did not play his best tennis, winning just 47 percent of first serve points, compared to his opponent’s 65.
He will next meet Monfils who follows a 6-2, 6-2 easy win against this year’s Halle champion Philipp Kohlschreiber whom the sixth seed ousted in just over one hour of play. Monfils won 72 percent of service points and 48 of German’s ones, while his opponent, who couldn’t break the Frenchman, came up with a poor 52 service percentage and a 28 return one.
En route to the quarter finals, Djokovic has also ousted Ryan Harrison 6-2, 6-3 in the second round, while Monfils had previously eliminated injured Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-3, 0-4 (abandon). The head to head series between the two have gone 7-0 to Nole, who last defeated the Frenchman at this year’s Montreal event. Djokovic is also chasing his tenth title of the season. His last success comes from the Montreal event.
