smoking is good for people. However, it seems that smoking is not so bad, after all.
Of course, heavy smoking can lead to serious problems such as heart conditions, strokes and different types of cancer, but it seems that this nasty habit also has some benefits. New research on the subject raises some good questions about whether should start smoking or not. The risks of early death are still very high among smokers, but how does smoking make our lives better after all?
First of all, it seems that all the money people spend on cigarettes may help them avoid any type of knee surgery. New studies seem to be suggesting that men who smoked were at lower risks of undergoing total joint replacement surgery in comparison to those who smoked less or not at all. A group of researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia made the study on this particular issue and they discovered that joint injuries happen mostly to either joggers or obese people. Given that smokers are neither great joggers nor morbidly obese, their risks of getting a joint injury is really low. Although the researchers could not tell exactly why this happens, it seems that the nicotine in cigarettes has something to do with preventing cartilage and joint deterioration.
Secondly, it seems that smoking is linked to lower risks of developing Parkinson’s disease. Throughout time numerous studies have suggested that people who were long time smokers had lower chances of developing Parkinson’s disease. That is not only because smokers usually die of something else, at younger ages, but it seems that everything has to do with the number of cigarettes smoked throughout one’s life. Although the researchers involved in this study failed to mention why smokers were protected against Parkinson’s disease, it seems that the more cigarettes one has, the better their chances of not developing this horrible condition. Yet, heavy smoking can lead to other serious problems.
Thirdly, smoking seems to lower people’s chances of getting obese. Figure that! The whole United States of America is trying to fight against obesity and the answer was right in our faces? Well, it is widely known that the nicotine in the cigarettes acts as appetite suppressant. That has been known for years and tobacco companies always took advantages from this, trying to lure women who were trying to lose some weight into getting the nasty habit of smoking. Furthermore, a recently published study even suggests that this is the main reason for which people would not stop smoking: they would get fat. And who wants that, really? Second to the addiction, this is the other most important thing when it comes to not being able to making people lose this habit. There is a very strong and complex relationship between smoking and weight control, but no respectable doctor would ever ask someone to start smoking in order to lose weight. However, some researchers at Yale University said that given that this link between the two is very strong, scientists may end up finding a new way so as to help people from losing the desired weight.
Fourthly, smoking seems to lower the risk of death after a heart attack. When it comes to smokers, they seem to have lower mortality rates after a heart attack, in comparison to non-smokers. According to a study published back in 2005, this happens because smokers usually go through a heart attack when they are very young, in comparison to non-smokers who may suffer a heart attack at old age and that heart attack could be fatal for them. However, no one can say exactly why smokers are alive and well after a heart attack and why non-smokers are not. No new theories have been brought forth on this issue.
Lastly, smoking comes in the help of a certain hurt drug, called clopidogrel, and it makes the drug work better. This particular drug is used to inhibit blood clots in people who suffer from coronary artery disease and other such things that can always lead to heart attacks and strokes. According to a study published back in 2010, it seems that people who smoke help this drug work better. The study also showed the benefits of smoking 10 cigarettes a day. Some things in the cigarette smoke makes the drug work better, according to what the researchers involved in that study wrote at the time.
Overall, no one in their right mind would ever ask people to start smoking in order to help them benefit from the things mentioned above. But once again, it seems that science is trying to tell us that things found in tobacco can help develop new treatments for certain conditions which nowadays are really hard to keep under control.
