Nurburgring. The Aussie being the fastest with a 1 minute and 31,771 second time. Fernando Alonso, who had come first in the first session, came second, while Sebastian Vettel was the third fastest at home.
Webber, who declared he won’t split with Red Bull at the end of the season, is now very close to winning his first tile of the season, though he will have to fight hard for that, taking into account that Alonso’s recent shape has already brought him the first success in England last week, while his team-mate Vettel is trying to secure the leading position in the world standings with a seventh title.
The Spaniard was 0,168 seconds slower than Webber, while the 23-year-old world leader set a 0,373 second gap against his team-mate. Yet again, Felipe Massa came fourth after spending 36 laps on the track, setting a 0,643 second gap. Mercedes did a much better job than in the first practice, as former world champions Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg grabbed back to back places much to the delight of the crowd who are expecting a home favorite to win the tenth Grand Prix of the year.
Chinese GP champions Lewis Hamilton came seventh, being the first to set an over a second gap, while Renault picked the next two positions after Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov set a much better pace than in the first training session. Force India’s Adrian Sutil also impressed with a tenth place, being one second and a half slower than Webber. His team-mate di Resta was just 0,088 slower than him and just 0,074 seconds slower than Jenson Button, winner of the Canadian Grand Prix, who spent just 17 laps on the track.
Webber is ready to gun for Vettel in the world standings, although the Aussie still lacks great performances. The German, by contrast, will be chasing his seventh title of the year, having last grabbed one in Valencia. However, this does not scare Webber who claimed that he will do everything it takes to stay in touch with the first place.
“It’s not often that you are closing in on each other in the last laps. That was the awkward thing. We are free to race, most of the timeThings have changed a bit the last few races. We need to make it as difficult as possible for Sebastian not to run away with it,” said the Aussie who is also ready to commit to his current team Red Bull who are first in the team table.
The third free practice as well as the qualifying are to take place on Saturday, while the race starts on Sunday.
