Just one day after her remarkable return, Serena Williams was ousted by the world number three Vera Zvonareva in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. The American has thus packed from Eastbourne, being expected to make another return at the Wimbledon Grand Slam.
The Russian needed three hours to get rid of the former world leader to whom she conceded the first opener very easily. Williams led her opponent 6-3, 5-3 at one point, but failed to keep the same pace, allowing the favorite to break through and push the second term into the tie-break which showed the two players going head to head until the tenth mini-break. Zvonareva grabbed a precious late break to make it 1-1 and push the clash into decider.
That was also Vera’s second win over the American who still leads the head to head series 6-1, having last defeated the Russian at the 2010 Wimbledon Grand Slam. The 26-year-old’s had previously defeated the world number 26 at the 2006 Cincinnati event. “I definitely think I can do better, but that’s what’s so comforting, is I know I can do so much better and improve, and I’m so close to being there. One or two points and I could have won the match. That’s just me not playing, not even holding a racquet for over eight months, then finally picking one up and being able to do that,” said Serena after the game.
Zvonareva will next meet tenth-ranked Samantha Stosur who has flown into the quarter finals after easing past Bojana Jovanovski 6-3, 6-2. The two are expected to face each other for the ninth time. The 27-year-old Aussie leads the head to head confrontations 6-2, her last victory dating from this year’s Stuttgart tournament. On the other side, the Russian won the first two meetings, the last one coming at the 2004 Wimbledon Grand Slam.
The same day, her sister Venus stunned the former world number one Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-2 to pick her second big victory of the week. Williams had previously defeated this year’s Strasbourg champion Andrea Petkovic 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. That was also Venus’s seventh win over the Serb whom she leads in the head to head confrontations 7-1. On the same second half of the table, Daniela Hantuchova, winner of the 2011 Pattaya City event, ousted the French Open champion Li Na 7-6, 6-3 to set her 11th meeting with the world number 33 American.
Venus leads the head to head series 10-0, having last defeated the world’s number 25 at last year’s Miami Masters. Winner of three titles this season, including the Brisbane, Paris and Madrid Masters, Petra Kvitova has set her second clash with world number 13 Agnieszka Radwanksa of Poland. The Czech edged Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6, while her next opponent eased past the French Open finalist Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-2. The eighth-ranked Czech first beat the 22-year-old at the 2009 Linz tournament.
Finally, one of the toughest quarter finals will be brought by Victoria Azarenka and Maion Bartoli. The world number five Belarusian, winner of the Miami Masters and Marbella event, upset Elena Baltacha 6-1, 7-6 in the second round, while the ninth-ranked Bartoli, whom she’ll be playing for the seventh time, eased past Maria Jose Martinez 6-3, 6-3.
The head to head series between the two is led by the Belarusian 6-0, having last defeated Bartoli at the 2010 Tokyo-Pan Pacific event.
