Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been ousted from the English event by Radek Stepanek who beat the French in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The Czech will next meet either Rainer Schuttler or Kei Nishikori.
Tsonga, finalist at last week’s Queens grass tournament, allowed Stepanek to break him four times, the 28-year-old winning just 55 percent of his service points. Stepanek needed just one hour and ten minutes to make the progress, the win over the world number 19 being his first one ever. “I’ve played a lot of matches. That was my goal for this preparation. Today I’m just tired, but I’m sure I will recover enough to play Wimbledon and to be ready,” said Tsonga after the game.
On the other side, the 57th-ranked Stepanek has improved his season record to 15 wins and 12 losses, and will next meet the winner between Nishikori and Rainer Schuttler. If the Japanese wins, the two will meet for the first time ever, but the favorite remains Stepanek whop chases his fifth title of career in Eastbourne. On the same half of the table, Janko Tipsarevic beat James Ward 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the opening day and is to meet Mikhail Kukushkin in the second term. The Kazakhstan player eased past Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei 6-3, 6-3 to set his first meeting with the Serb.
Grigor Dimitrov stunned Kevin Anderson in two sets, 6-3, 6-2 in the second term and will next meet the winner between Tipsarevic and Kukushkin. Concerning the second half of the draw, Igor Kunitsyn and Julien Benneteau will also fight or a place into the semi finals. The Russian overcame Illya Marchenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, while his next opponent edged Somdev Devvarman of India 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. The two are expected to meet for the first time, the world number 71 Kunitsyn being the main favorite for the next clash.
The Russian had previously ousted one of the main favorites Pablo Andujar in the first term, while Benneteau had eliminated Ryan Sweeting in two sets, 6-2, 7-6. Bottom of the table, Carlos Berlocq is to meet Belgian Olivier Rochus who follows an easy progress after Lleyton Hewitt abandoned the opener at 6-2, 3-0 down. As for the Argentine, Berlocq upset second seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the first day, the two being expected to meet for the first time this term.
Donaldo Young and Andreas Seppi will also fight for a quarter final berth. The American eased past crowd favorite Daniel Cox of England 6-1, 7-5, while the Italian overcame Tobias Kamke of Germany 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
