After the official release of iOS 4.2 Gold Master, everyone is waiting for the final release of the firmware. Apple’s developers team has included few new features, bug fixes and patches in the new firmware.
There are quite a few tools available for iOS 4.1 jailbreak, but some users are not sure about the upcoming iOS 4.2 jailbreak tools. To understand the iOS 4.2 jailbreak scenario, here are the details of each tool.
Limera1n for iOS 4.2
GeoHot’s Limera1n is built on Comex’s userland jailbreak technique, which basically gives us untethered jailbreaking facility on iOS 4.1 devices. Apple will patch this security hole in iOS 4.2 firmware update and Limera1n will become a tethered jailbreak tool.
Comex is developing untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.2, but it will only support the devices that have the SHSH blobs for earlier iOS versions. If you haven’t saved the SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1, use TinyUmbrella tool.
GreenPois0n for iOS 4.2
GreenPois0n uses the same Limera1n exploit to jailbreak iOS 4.1 devices. If you want to use GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2, wait for the Chronic Dev team to incorporate Comex’s new untethered technique in the tool. Again, do save your SHSH blobs.
Redsn0w 0.9.6 for iOS 4.2
The recently released Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 2 jailbreaks iOS 4.2 Gold Master firmware. So this means that we can expect an updated version of Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.2. Currently, Redsn0w 0.9.6 is still in its beta stage and it gives weird errors in Cydia.
Dev team is working on Cydia app to fix these issues. It would take some time to build a proper tool for iOS 4.2 firmware.
PwnageTool for iOS 4.2
PwnageTool 4.1 is available for Mac based iOS 4.1 jailbreak. iPhone Dev team has not confirmed the PwnageTool update for iOS 4.2, but Chpwn, iPhone developer, is said to be working on the Windows version of PwnageTool. So, we might get an update for iOS 4.2.
Sn0wbreeze 2.1 for iOS 4.2
Sn0wbreeze developer, iH8sn0w, was supposed to release Sn0wbreeze 2.1 for iOS 4.1, but he hasn’t released it due to some unknown reasons. It’s quite possible that he will roll out the Sn0wbreeze 2.1 to jailbreak iOS 4.2 on Windows platform.
For those who don’t know, Sn0wbreeze is an alternative for PwnageTool. It helps create the custom firmware, which can be used to jailbreak the iDevices without upgrading the baseband value.
Ultrasn0w unlock for iOS 4.2
Musclenerd, the Dev member, has officially announced that Ultrasn0w for iOS 4.2 will be out after the official release of iOS 4.2. So, iPhone users can sit back and wait for the update.
iDevice jailbreakers have multiple options to use any jailbreak tool on their device, as Apple’s software fix can’t patch the bootrom level exploit used in Limera1n and similar tools. iPhone unlockers will also be able to unlock their iPhones using Ultrasn0w. The upcoming tools will support iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad and Apple TV.
