Phil Fulmer has decided to pull his name out of the list of candidates for the Minnesota Gophers’ coaching job.
Knoxville radio host Jimmy Hyams of WNML-AM/FM said that the former Tennessee coach told him that the job was “not a good fit,” this according to the Mr. SEC website.
Fulmer had been reportedly contacted by Minnesota alum Tony Dungy about his interest in the position.
Minnesota fired head coach Tim Brewster on Oct. 17 after a 1-6 start to the season. The Gophers have been coached by offensive coordinator Jeff Horton, who is serving as interim head coach the remainder of the season.
Fulmer was 152-52 in 16 seasons at Tennessee. He stepped down in 2008 after a dismal 5-7 season before being replaced by Lane Kiffin.
According to the Pioneer Press (Minn.), several big names are on the school’s list for possible coaching candidates including Boise State’s Chris Petersen, Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh, and TCU’s Gary Patterson.
