A Notre Dame student was killed when a video tower overlooking the football team’s practice collapsed during high winds onto an adjacent street.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the student was filming football practice from a hydraulic scissor lift when the incident occurred. The student was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died, the school said.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins said. “Our hearts go out to the student’s family and friends and our prayers and profound sympathies are with them during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of someone so young is a terrible shock and a great sadness. Our entire community shares in the family’s grief.”
The cause of the accident was unknown but at the time, according to the Associated Press, winds were gusting at 51 mph.
Notre Dame plays host to Tulsa on Saturday.
