Manchester United thwarted minnow Arsenal 8-2 yesterday at the Old Trafford where Arsene Wenger’s side proved to be in big crisis despite their denials. The Gunners faced a real test in front of the lively defending champions who scored five goals only in the second half.
Rooney scored a hat-trick, while Ashley Young finished with a double, putting United top of the table in Premiership. On the other side, Arsenal were only allowed to score a couple of consolation points through Walcott and van Persie. The first golden chance belonged to Welbeck who strike it wide after being perfectly served by Ashley Young.
Arshavin picked the first yellow card in the 15th minute after a tough challenge on Jones. Seven minutes later, Welbeck brought the opener after a poor defending from Koscielny whose intervention failed, allowing the United striker to score his second goal of the season. just three minutes later Arsenal were gifted a penalty after Jonny Evans took down Walcott. He would also receive a yellow card for his sins.
De Gea denied van Persie to keep United’s win chances alive. Even more than that the 30th minute brought United a second one through Young whose superb shot fro the edge of the box reached the top corner for a screamer. De Gea then saved successive finishes to start making his name on Trafford.
Welbeck was replaced by Chicharito Hernandez after 37 minutes of play with the first one leaving through a standing ovation. Four minutes later, Untied made it 3-0 through Rooneyl whose free kick masterpiece reached the top scorer from 20 yards or so.
Arsenal managed to cut the deficit seconds before the half time to enter the locker rooms with a 1-3 gap. Three minutes into the second part United missed a great opportunity through Young who was denied by a vigilant Szczesny. Despite being two goals down, Arsenal continued to put pressure in the seconds term, as well, missing their first chance in the 54th minute when saw van Persie get denied by De Gea inside the box.
One minute later Arshavin penetrated the box only to fire it wide in what should have been a more difficult test for the Spanish keeper, if not a second one for Arsneal. United broke back immediately through Hernandez whose low finish allowed the Polish keeper to hold it easily.
Nani mocked a golden chance in the 60th minute. Young beat his mark to feed the Portuguese inside the box for a poor finish. Wenger then replaced Coquelin with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, but things would not change too much for the opposite side.
Rooney completed his double in the 65trh minute with yet another tremendous set piece pat Szczesny as things started to look very clear for the two teams. Three minutes later disaster came for the Gunners as Nani made it 5-1 after a great pass from the same Rooney. The Portuguese was replaced by Park right afterwards.
Just a couple of minutes later, the South Korean extended the lead to five goals. But then a poor defending allowed Arsenal to make it 2-6 in the 74th minute through van Persie who volleyed it home from close range. Jenkinson conceded a red card for a tough foul on Hernandez, ten minutes before the stoppage time.
Walcott awarded the opponents a penalty in the 82nd minute after taking down Evra inside the box. Rooney converted into the left hand post for a hat-trick. Walcott and van Persie were then replaced by Chamakh and Lansbury respectively.
Finally, Park completed his double with another screamer in the 92nd minute to bring Wenger his worst ever defeat with Arsenal. “They have class and they punished us. It was 3-1 at half-time and I think that was harsh against us. We missed a penalty, we had a chance to get back to 3-2. We tried desperately to get back but we opened ourselves up and were punished. Their finishing was great today,” said the French manager, who future might have already become uncertain at the Emirates, after the game.
Arsenal lie 17th in the standings with one point, the loss to Untied being their second of the season after the Liverpool defeat. On contrast, Untied have climbed top spot with nine points, sharing the leading position with arch rivals City who have also won three games out of three. Red Devils will next meet Bolton Wanderers, while Arsenal host Swansea City next Saturday.
