Goerges has advanced into the US Open second term after knocking Kristina Barrois in two sets 6-3, 6-2 to face Laura Pous of Spain in the next round.
The German, winner of this year’s Stuttgart event, needed just one hour and five minutes to oust the German player who conceded three services. On the other side, Julia managed to set the pace in both sets, not allowing her opponent to convert any of the three break points. The 19th favorite also hit nine aces past her opponent, who finished the game with a poor 19 receiving percentage and a 59 first serve one.
Goerges, who has never won a Grand Slam trophy, finished the game with nine winners, a 56 first serve percentage as well as a 43 return one. She won both sets in 32 minutes, being expected to meet Pous who has made a free progress after her opponent Misaki Doi abandoned the meeting at 2-6, 7-6, 2-5 down.
The same day, Shuai Peng, who starts the US Open as 13th seed, ousted Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-4, needing one hour and a half to secure a second term berth. The Chinese had a 58 first serve percentage, and converted four out of ten break points, compared to her opponent whose showing included a 60 first serve percentage, five double faults and a 38 return percentage.
Lepchenko only converted two of six break points, allowing the Chinese to clinch the opener in nearly 40 minutes. The second set saw her push harder , but still it was the same seeder to set a two game lead and head towards a clear win. Next up for Peng is either Virginie Razzano or Tsvetana Pironkova.
Lucie Safarova needed nearly two hours to eliminate Magdalena Rybarikova whom the 27th seed edged in three sets after surviving an early scare, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Rybarikova won the opener very easily thanks to two early breaks which propelled the Slovak four games ahead of her opponent.
Unfortunately, she would both lose the pace in the next two terms and concede four breaks which cost her the victory. Safarova won the second set after a strong start and had a much easier life in the decider, winning the third term at two.
Romania’s Alexandra Dulgheru has also made a straight set progress at the US Open after stunning fifth favorite Petra Kvitova in what was one of the biggest surprises of the openers. The Romanian beat the seeder 7-6, 6-3 after breaking her opponent five times.
Dulgheru created nine break point chances, while her opponent could only convert five out of 13 break points. She also needed more than one hour to win the breaker and just half an hour to clinch the second one. The Romanian finished the game with a 66 first serve percentage, a 54 return one and ten winners, compared to her opponent’s 49 first serve percentage, a 43 return one and 20 winners.
Next up for Dulgheru is her compatriot Monica Niculescu who crashed Patricia Mayr Achleitner of Austria in two sets 6-3, 6-3. The Romanian converted seven out of 13 break points and conceded five services. She also finished her showing with a 76 first serve percentage and an ace, while Achleitner won 58 percent of first serve points and 51 percent on return.
Bottom of the table, second seed Vera Zvonareva, who is chasing her third title of the year in New York, eased past Stephanie Foretz Gacon in two easy sets 6-3, 6-0. The Russian broke her opponent five times and did not allow the French to build any break point chance, claiming the victory in just under an hour.
Vera finished the game with a 56 first serve percentage, a 54 return one and 19 winners, compared to her opponent’s 56 first serve percentage, 27 return one and eight winners. She will next face the winner between Lucie Hradecka and Kateryna Bondarenko.
