Dinara Safina has declared she won’t be able to play any game this season due to a lower-back pain which has been persisting since May. The former world number one is likely to stay out of the court for at least five more months.
Safina, who has not won any title this year, withdrew from both Wimbledon and Roland Garros Grand Slam as she only made a few appearances this year. “I don’t know how long my time out is going to last because I don’t want to torture myself and my body anymore,” said the Russian. “I’m sorry to report that my back is still acting up and I will not be able to play until at least the end of the year.”
Marat Safin’s sister, winner of 12 singles titles and nine doubles ones, set her best singles performance at the Marbella’s event where the 25-year-old reached the quarter final earlier this year. Safina had poor season start though as she was unable to reach second terms in Auckland, Hobart and Australian open. February brought her instead the last doubles titles in Kuala Lumpur where she triumphed alongside Galina Voskoboeva.
In March she improved her game, reaching the fourth term in Indian Wells, but fell in the second term at the Miami Masters where she lost to compatriot and third favorite Vera Zvonareva. On eyear later she reached the Madrid Masters second term where she was ousted by Julia Gorges. Unfortunately, she got seriously injured in May, something which has kept and will keep her away from the circuit until 2012.
Among her career highs, Safina has gathered important trophies, but has never picked a Grand Slam trophy. Instead she reached two French open finals in 2008 and 2009, an Australian Open last term in 2009, as well as two semi finals in Wimbledon the same year, and at the US Open in 2008.
She is also winner of the 2009 Rome and Madrid Masters, 2008 Berlin, Los Angeles and Montreal events as well as of the 2005 Paris Indoors and 2003 Palermo tournament.
