Tobias Kamke has become the first player to reach the second term of the Washington event when the world number 94 German eased past Denis Kudla of United States 6-4, 6-2 to set his second lifetime meeting with John Isner.
Kamke fired four aces past the American who committed four double faults and conceded four services, two per set. The German had a slower start, allowing the crowd favorite convert one of three break points, but managed to stay in touch with the first lead as he clinched the opener in just over half an hour thanks to a couple of precious points.
Concerning the second term, it saw the saw Kamke power through to a much more consistent lead, setting a three game early lead to leave his opponent even four games behind for an easy win and progress. The German finished the game with a 62 first serve percentage, seven break points and a 48 return percentage, winning at the same time 74 percent of service points, compared to Kudla who could only win 51 percent of first serve point, 26 on return and 52 on his service.
Next up for Kamke is John Isner, winner of the Newport event this season, whom he will be playing for the second time this year for a third term berth. The American has been favored by a BYE in the opener so Isner is expected to make his debut against the German whom he beat at the same Newport grass event 7-5, 7-6.
On the same first half of the table, top seed Gael Monfils will make his debut against either Ryan Sweeting or Alex Bogomolov of United States, while defending champion David Nalbandian could face either James Blake or Tatsuma Ito of Japan in the second term. Mardy Fish, winner of this term’s Atlanta event is a second favorite in Washington, being expected to face either Philipp Petzschner, finalist in Halle this year, or Radek Stepanek.
Third favorite Victor Troicki is to meet the winner between Ryan Harrison and Mischa Zverev in the second term, while the fourth seed Jurge Melzer could make his debut against either Donald Young or Artem Sitak. Finally, fifth seeded Fernando Verdasco who follows a great week in Gstaad where he reached the final, will also have to wait until Tuesday for his next opponent’ s name. The Spaniard will make his debut in Washington against either Marinko Matosevic.
