Cincinnati managed to keep their sheet clean throughout the entire meeting as they edged leaders Giants 9-0 on Sunday at the Great American Ball Park where Reds have also extended their streak to three wins.
Cincinnati’s early outburst included three precious points scored in the first inning. Votto singled to right, allowing Stubbs to bring the first lead with Renteria getting to second. Phillips then hit a sacrifice fly to center as the same Renteria doubled the advantage with Votto getting to third. Things got much worse for the visitors who conceded one more point in the same term. Bruce singled to center as Votto suggested a clean win at the Ball Park.
The next two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one saw Frazier extend the lead to four points thanks to 395 foot homerun, the first of the meeting. The fifth term saw Bruce hit a sacrifice fly and Renteria score his second point for a much more comprehensive lead. The sixth term also went clean for the two sides as Reds were nearing the big victory against the giant San Francisco.
Votto hit a 414 foot homerun in the seventh, being followed by Stubbs and Renteria who put their side eight points ahead of the sleeping leaders. Finally, Alonso singled to right as Stubbs had the last word in Cincinnati. Said Baker: “We were swept by the Mets and came back to sweep the Giants.”
He also praised Johnny’s showing, claiming that “he gave us what we needed. He was masterful. He works hard. He competes. You see him out running line to line. He didn’t get any hits, but works on his hitting and bunting. He is trying to be a better base runner.”
Reds remain fourth in the Central Conference with a .491 record which features 53 wins and 55 losses, the victory over San Francisco being their third in a row, fourth in the past ten games and 32nd at home. As for the Giants, they remain top spot in the West, two gamesback safe, with a .565 percentage featuring 51 wins and 47 losses, the defeat to Reds being their third in a row and sixth in the past ten games.
