Estonian police said they have identified the man that attempted to assassinate the defense minister and was said to have taken two hostages on Thursday. The man died when police intervened and the hostages were unharmed. It is not yet known whether the man killed himself or was shot dead by the police. Later reports denied that he had not taken any hostages.
Estonian prime minister Andrus Ansip released the name of the gunman, Karen Drambjan, 57, Armenian-born lawyer and member of the left-wing party United left Party.
Ansip made a comment in which he alluded that the Estonian lawyer seemed to have drawn on the incident in Norway, when Anders Behring Breivik killed more than 70 people on an island, after planting a bomb in the governmental buildings in the centre of Oslo, Norway’s capital city.
The prime minister added that the motives of this action remained unclear.
According to new reports released by the police, Drambjan went to the defense ministry to protest the cuts of staff.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Drambjan’s party is one that protects the interest of the Russian minority in Estonia.
The Russian minority in Estonia is of 25% of the population, and Estonians still hold the grudge for the events during the Soviet, when their country was part of the Soviet Union.
Russians in Estonia have often complaint of discrimination in this country that is a part of the European Union.
On Thursday, Drambjan opened fire in the entrance hall of the Defense Ministry and detonated smoke bombs and at least ten explosive devices. He was having 100 rounds of handgun when he entered the ministry, but did not enter the staff rooms. Defense minister was unharmed.
