World number three Vera Zvonareva has clinched her second title of the season after beating Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-4 in the Baku Cup final in Azerbaijan where the Russian finished the event with just a set dropped.
After a tough quarter final game against Anna Tatishvili who had threatened Vera with a big win in the quarter finals, this year’s Doha winner had managed to speed through the final with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mariya Koryttseva. In the last term, she had no difficulties to get past compatriot Pervak who always stayed behind the top seed without being able to put any pressure on her.
The head to head series between the two Russians have now gone 2-0 to the third ranked who had previously defeated the 20-year-old at the 2010 Pattaya City event. The Baku Cup brought Vera her 12th career singles title and the second one of the term. Pervak started the Azerbaijan tournament as seventh seed but managed to impress throughout the week with crucial wins against revelation Galina Voskoboeva, who was Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s killer in the quarter finals, and Aravane Rezai.
“Vera is a really good player and has a lot of experience. It was tough to play against her. I don’t think I showed my best game but I didn’t play that badly in the second set. It was a really tough match but I played well,” said Pervak after the game. On the other side, Vera admitted that despite of a few straight-set wins, she was always forced to play her best tennis in Baku. “Right now women’s tennis is at a very high level and very competitive, and I know if I don’t have my full concentration or give my best there’s no chance I’ll win a match,” she said.
Azvonareva beat Nigina Abduraimova 6-1, 7-5 in the opening round and made an easy progress into the quarters after Kristina Kucova abandoned the meeting in the second set. As for Pervak, she had previously stunned Voskoboeva 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the semi finals, Rezai 6-1, 6-2 in the last eight term, Vesna Dolonts of Russia 6-3, 6-3 and unseed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the first day.
Neither of the two has confirmed their presence at either Stanford or Elkridge events, which both start on Monday.
