World champion Sebastian Vettel has secured his leading position for another two months thanks to a comprehensive win set in Valencia on Sunday. The German, who had previously set the pole, came first at 1 hour, 39 minutes and 36,169 seconds, ten seconds ahead of the second Fernando Alonso, who remains titless this term.
The 23-year-old German, who is likely to finish the term first for the second time in a row, dominated the entire race, as he also was clocked among the fastest drivers on the track. The six-time winner managed to open a big gap between him and his main followers, including team-mate Mark Webber, who had set the second position on Saturday, Lewis Hamilton, who started third, and crowd favorite Alonso, who started the race on fourth position.
The former world champion came 10,891 seconds behind the German, while Webber who had some hard times against both the Spaniard and Hamilton, set a third podium place, coming 27,255 seconds slower than his team-mate who made of the greatest races this season. The Briton came fourth, 46,190 seconds behind Vettel, being followed by Felipe Massa with a 51,705-second gap. Jenson Button was sixth with just over a second gap, while Nico Rosberg and Jaime Alguersuari were the last to earb some points in Valencia.
Finally, Adrian Sutil and Nick Heidfeld were gapped one lap, the same as nine other drivers, includingSergio Perez of Sauber, Williams Ruben Barrichello, Vitaly Petrov and the former world champion Michael Schumacher who had previously finished the qualifying eighth.
Said the German: “This is the best one so far. Maybe from the outside, I don’t know how much was happening in the grand prix, it looked like a boring race but I enjoyed it so much. For some reason I enjoy this track.” Alonso, who has missed another chance to win a title this season, looked happy though with the podium position, his third of the year (a second place in Monaco, a third one in Istanbul). “Finally with a normal race we get this chance to be on the podium to celebrate this fantastic weekend.”
Everybody finished the race in Valencia though, a rare performance this term, which saw Hispania’s Vitantino Liuzzi and Narain Karthikeyan coming the last and finishing 54 of 57 laps. Lotus’s Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli, and Virgin’s Timo Glock and Jerome D’Ambrosio all set a two-lap gap.
Vettel has now gone well ahead of Jenson Button, sitting top spot with 186 points, 77 more than the Briton who share the second plac eiwth Webber. Lewis Hamilton is third with 97 points, ten more than his main follower Alonso. Felipe Massa follows the Spaniard with 42 points, while Mercedes’s Rosberg is seventh with 32 points, just one more than Vitaly Petrov.
Germans Nick Heidfeld and Michael Schumacher are ninth and tenth with 30 and 26 points respectively. Rubens Barrichello lies 15th with four points won in Monaco and Canada, while Paul di Resta is 17th with two points. Red Bulls are by far the best team of the season, sitting first with 295 points. McLaren have gone 77 points ahead of Ferrari, who are still looking for their first title.
Renault is fourth with 61 points, being followed by Mercedes with 58. Sauber are sixth with 27 points as they felt to earn some points in Valencia. Toro Rosso and Force Indian won four and two points respectively at the European Grand Prix but they remain seventh and eighth in the world standings. Williams are the last to have won some points this year, four, while Hispania, Lotus and Virgin are scoreless.
