Defending champion Rafa Nadal has made another easy progress after crashing Ryan Sweeting in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the second term of the English Grand Slam. The 25-year-old Spaniard will next meet Gilles Muller of Luxemburg who has been propelled through after Milos Raonic abandoned the meeting at 3-2 up.
Nadal first broke the American in the fourth game of the opener to secure a 3-1 lead which he eventually converted into an easy minimal advantage. The second term found the main favorite powering through to a 3-0 lead thanks to a couple of early breaks which allowed Rafa to stay safe and maintain the gap until the end of the term. Sweeting only converted two services as Nadal closed out the second round in nearly half an hour.
Finally, the third set found the two exchanging three breaks, two of which being taken by the same Nadal who first broke his opponent in the third game. Sweeting broke back immediately, threatening with a comeback when it counted the most. Unfortunately, the Spaniard didn’t allow him to get any closer, breaking the American in the seventh game for a 4-3 lead. He then held both of his services, something which helped the world champion to secure a third term berth.
Fourth favorite Andy Murray has grabbed a much easier win than he had claimed in the opening day as the Scott eased past Tobias Kamke of Germany in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to put his previous four-set victory behind. Next up for the Briton is Ivan Ljubicic who also clinched an easy win after ousting Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Tomas Berdych is to face Alex Bogomolov Jr. in the third round after the Czech managed to keep the sheet clean for the second time in a row yesterday against Julien Benneteau whom the seventh favorite eliminated 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Tenth seed Andy Roddick upset Romania’s Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to play Feliciano Lopez in the third term. The Spaniard needed four sets and two breakers to get rid of Rainer Schuttler of Germany whom he defeated 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Richard Gasquet and Simone Bolelli have both bagged two straight-set wins in the second round. The French eased past Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, while his next opponent stunned Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. Eighth favorite Gael Monfils overcame Grega Zemlja of Sloveniaafter losing the opener 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 to meet Lukasz Kubot of Poland in the third round. Kubot stunned Ivo Karlovic 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 to face Monfils for the first time ever.
On the second half of the table, second favorite Novak Djokovic, who lacks the English Grand trophy, eased past Jeremy Chardy in straight easy sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to meet Kevin Anderson who follows a five-set victory grabbed against Illya Marchenko whom the South African edged 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Said the Serb: “I’m very satisfied with the way I started the tournament. Today’s performance was great. The serve was very accurate. It was quite difficult conditions for both of us because we had to face the strong wind. So I went more for the precision, and I got the returns when I needed to. Really, really happy with the overall performance.”
Juan Martin Del Potro is to face Olivier Rochus of Belgian. The US Open Argentine champion crashed Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-5, 6-3 in the opening term, while his next opponent overcame Kenny de Schepper of France in five sets, 6-7, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Dudi Sela and Gilles Simon are also to fight for a place into the third term. The Israeli ousted Frederico Gil 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, while the French overcame Edouard Roger Vasselin 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.
David Ferrer, a seventh favorite, is to face Ryan Harrison in the second term after he upset Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. As for his next opponent, who will be facing the Spaniard for the first time this term, has also made an easy progress after eliminating Zagreb champion Ivan Dodig 7-6, 6-0, 7-5. Queens’ finalist Jo Wilfried Tsonga also kept the sheet clean in the first term when the French beat Go Soeda 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.
John Isner and Nicolas Mahut have provided a much shorter meeting than last year’s ‘marathon’ as the American defeated the French 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 to play Nicolas Almagro in the second round. Fifth favorite Robin Soderling needed four sets to oust the Halle finalist Philipp Petzschner in the first day, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. The Swede will meet Lleyton Hewitt who overcame Kei Nishikori 6-1, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.
Third seed and six-time winner of the Wimbledon trophy Roger Federer defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the opener to face Adrian Mannarino in the next phase. The French follows a five-set win over Conor Niland whom he edged 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. David Nalbandian eliminated unseeded Julian eister in three sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 to confront Andreas Haider Maurer of Austria in the second round. Maurer stunned Florent Sarra 7-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Marcos Baghdatis and the Hertogenbosch winner Andreas Seppi will also fight for a third term spot. The Cypriot overcame James Blake 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, while the great shaped Italian eased past Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. Finally, Viktor Troicki survived an early scare against Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina whom the Serb eventually eliminated 3-6, 6-0, 7-6, 6-3. He will next face Yen Hsun Lu of Taipei who follows a straight-set win over Tommy Robredo whom he stunned 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.
