Andre Villas Boas has officially agreed on a three-year deal with Chelsea after departing from the Portuguese side. Boas, who had a very successful season, thus becomes the seventh manager under Roman Abramovic era as the 33-year-old is to replace Carlo Ancelotti who was sacked by the Blues last month.
Neither of the two sides gave any detail regarding the material issue, but it is already known the Stamford Bridge side paid the 15 million euro-release clause earlier this week. Boas is winner of the Europa League trophy, the Portuguese title and of the Portuguese Cup, all the three successes dating from this term. Chelsea have revealed the Portuguese coach was among the main candidates for the vacant job as Guus Hiddink, who had been considered the first favorite for the job, is to stay in Turkey.
“Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time. Andre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years,” Blues’ statement read.
Boas is now expected to bring several Porto players with whom he won all the three trophies, the main favorite being Falcao and Hulk. The first one was a revelation throughout the entire Europa League competition, but also within the Portuguese league. Falcao finished the season with 16 goals, while Hulk was the top-scorer of the season with 23 goals scored in 26 games.
Porto won the title with 84 points, 21 ahead of their main followers Benfica. Boas is also expected to follow Jose Mourinho’s way. The Special one had led the Portuguese side to both Europa League and UEFA Champions League trophies, before he left them for the West-Londoners with whom he won a couple of titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup.
On the other side, Chelsea finished this season second, nine points behind the new champions Manchester Untied who ousted them from the Champions League quarter finals. Ancelotti thus failed to defend the title and the FA Cup. Boas has previously coached British Virgin Islands between 2000 and 2001 and Academica de Coimbra between 2009 and 2010.
He also worked as assistant for Jose Mourinho at Porto and Chelsea. The manager led the Portuguese to 49 wins in 58 games, and lost just four games, something which must have convinced the Blues he might be the solution for what they are looking for.
