It is a widely known fact that chronic stress is one of the most dangerous conditions from which a person can suffer, especially in the times we are living in.
Throughout time, chronic stress has been linked with a great deal of conditions, from obesity to insomnia and now it seems that it can also build up to cause panic. The new research that has been made on the issue will probably help people who suffer from panic attacks cope better with their condition, as they now know the source of it all. According to the researchers involved in the study, these panic attacks that people suffer from may not be caused by an acute event, but rather it is caused by the stress that builds up in time. Researchers from Brown University tried to find out what daily stress can lead to when it comes to human health and especially what how it can affect an individual’s panic symptoms. Their findings show that stressful events to which people are submitted throughout time are the main cause for the panic attacks. “We definitely expected the symptoms to get worse over time, but we also thought the symptoms would get worse right away,” said Ethan Moitra, a postdoctoral researcher at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. However, even though these events do not trigger panic attacks right away, people who know they suffer from them, but also their family and friends, should keep an eye on the situation, just in case. According to Dr. Martin Keller, principal investigator of the research, people who go through stressful situation should be fully aware of their symptoms and keep an eye on them for about three months, because they do not affect them right away.
For the research, Keller, Moitra and the other co-authors of the study analyzed data of 418 adults with panic disorder or panic disorder with agoraphobia, who were enrolled in the Harvard/Brown Anxiety Research Project between the years 1998 and 2004. The volunteers who took part in the study were asked basic questions about their daily lives and their levels of anxiety. The results of the study showed that people who were stressed when it came to their work or their family lives had symptoms of panic attacks which aggravated steadily for about 12 months. Although stress has been linked to panic attacks before, this is the first study to show that some stressful events in our lives may alter our symptoms of panic attacks. However, even though stressful events have proven to be associated with changes in panic symptom levels, the researchers said they needed to do more studies on the subject in order to understand exactly what role these stressful events play in our lives. Moitra concluded by saying that this may be one of those reasons for which panic disorders can get worse with time.
