Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has set his first final meeting with the world number four Andy Murray after ousting this week’s revelation James Ward 6-3, 7-6 to near his first title of the season.
A solitary break was sufficient for the Frenchman to win the opener and thus to move 1-0 ahead. Tsogna first broke the crowd favorite early in the second game to make it 3-0 later on and lever let go of his serves, winning the first set in half an hour. As for the second set, it showed the world number 216 pushing the meeting into a breaker. Ward managed to break the world number 19 in the second game of the round to go three games ahead. But the 24-year-old inexperienced player conceded his third service to allow the French to cut the deficit and to level the score later on.
Things got much worse for the Briton who could only hold his serves and force the 26-year-old opponent to play his best tennis. Tsonga was thus inclined to set a breaker with the unseeded, term which found the two going head to head and setting a 16-mini-break run. Tsonga won the breaker at the death 9-7 and is to meet the first seed Andy Murray for the sixth time.
Said the Frenchman, winner of five titles: “It was not the best match I did, but it was a semi-final and you have to win this match. I don’t care about my level today, because the most important thing was to win. I did it. I’m in the final… For the moment, Murray is better than me, so I have nothing to lose.” The same day, the 24-year-old Scott outclassed Andy Roddick in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to near his first title of the year.
Murray, who needed just one hour to make the progress, had a better start, managing to set a 3-0 lead thanks to an early break which proved to be sufficient for a 1-0 overall advantage. Roddick, who has been following an injury, allowed the crowd favorite to break him twice more in the first and fifth game of the second set as Murray grabbed a comprehensive win over the 2003-05 and 2007 Queens champion. If the Scott wins the final, he will be the first Briton to win more than on title since Arthur Lowe who won three titles there back in 1913, 1914 and 1924.
En route to the final, Tsonga has grabbed a very easy win against Michael Berrer whom he thwarted 6-0, 6-1 in the second term. The fortunate French reached the quarter final after Michael Llodra abandoned the game at 4-3 down. As for Murray, his route to the last term has brought him a free semi final berth after Marin Cilic retired due to medical problems, a 6-4, 7-6 win against Janko Tipsarevic but also a very tough three-set victory over Xavier Malisse whom the Scott edged 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round.
The head to head series between Murray and Tsonga are led by the Scott who has defeated the French four times in the previous five clashes, last occasion at the 2010 Chinese Masters in Shanghai. Wilfried’s only win comes form the 2008 Australian Open event.
