The truth is somewhere in the middle
The case of the maid that accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the International Monetary Fund chief, is slowly but surely crumbling as new doubts have begun to seed within the minds of the prosecutors. They are no longer sure that a crime as actually occurred.
Mr. Strauss-Kahn has been released from house arrest on Friday. Prosecutors from Manhattan District are still leading an investigation and there’s talk about dropping the charges against Dominique Strauss-Khan. Who knows where the truth is at?
There are been more and more doubts regarding the validity of her statements and her ability as a witness. At this rate the charges are heading slowly for dismissal, at least that’s what one of the officials that knows the situation said.
The accuser still stands by his declaration that she was indeed attacked, and there are physical signs of abuse to support her. But on the other hand she gave quite a few false statements. This is why prosecutors tend to believe more and more that the attack is turning into a lie as well. Some of them start to believe that the sexual act between them was consensual.
One of the lead prosecutors Joan Iluzzi-Orbon, stated that at the present time, the maid cannot be considered as a viable witness. He also states that, it would be necessary for him to actually believe her in order to consider her declaration as a valid one.
Kenneth Thompson, the lawyer that represents the maid, states that some of these inaccuracies are related to the number of times the maid had to relive and retell the story. Do you think she makes a solid statement?
At the beginning she seemed believable. She was crying and even touched deeply one of the prosecutors during an interview where she told a story about being raped in Guinea. Afterwards she admitted that the story was a fake, and lost most of her credibility.
The maid didn’t admit all the false statements at once, but after numerous meetings, her story started to loose consistency. It turns out that the story about her being beaten in Guinea was meant only to make sure that she receives U.S. asylum.
All in all, the maid may stick to the story, and despite the evidence that supports her, the prosecutors are unlikely to pursue the case, unless they know for sure that they are going to win. But currently the balance lies in mr. Strauss-Khan’s favor.
