Angels edge Dodgers to reach the leading position
Los Angeles Angels won the local derby against Dodgers 3-1 last night at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim to tie leaders Texas for the same season record in the West.
The first five terms went scoreless for both sides in what seemed to be another tight clash between the two arch-rivals. Dodgers managed though to take the first lead in the sixth inning, only to be left one point adrift in the next round. Loney doubled to center, allowing Furcal to score the first point of the meeting. Things got complicated for the visitors right afterwards.
The seventh term saw the Angeles score their only three points and thus grab a late victory in front of a 42,500 warmly crowd. Wells grounded out to second as Abreu evened the situation, while Branyan, who fired a 436-foot homer, and Kendrick gave their side a precious victory which sends them top spot in the Conference, alongside rivals Rangers.
Angels have gone 44-41 this season, the same as Rangers, sitting just behind them due to the point-difference, the win over Dodgers being their second in a row, eighth in the past ten games and 20th at home. As for Dodgers, they have gone .435 this term, percentage which features only 37 wins and 48 losses, the defeat to Angels being their second in a row, seventh in the past ten meetings and 24th on the road.
Said Branyan: “I didn’t really know what to expect, as far as playing time. All I knew was that I’d just gotten released by the Diamondbacks and the Angels wanted me to come play for them. In the situation I’m in now, I’m in a role where I get a start a week and come off the bench to try to help the ballclub.”
Texas Rangers 4 – 6 Florida Marlins
Marlins stunned the West leaders with a great play provided away at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington where the hosts have lost their Conference hegemony, at least for the moment, as Texas share now the leading position with Angels. Rangers managed to take an early 2-0 lead set in the fourth term, but they could only cut deficits from then on.
Cruz brought them the first lead in the first round when he hit a 419-foot homerun, while Beltre doubled the minimal advantage in the fourth, also thanks to a 417-foot homer. The fifth term went scoreless as the game was still looking tight. Bonifacio cut the deficit to one point in the sixth inning, which was also the turning point of the meeting.
The seventh term went dry for the two teams and the game seemed to remain open at any result. But an error committed by Andrus helped Petersen to even the situation and give the Marlins a last chance to break through. Morrison then doubled to right, allowing Sanchez and the same Ramirez to make it 4-2 and thus start drawing a clear and unexpected victory.
Furthermore, Wise scored the fifth straight point for Florida within the same term, following Stanton’s single to center. Rangers then replied through Kinsler who made it 3-5 also thanks to a throwing error committed by second baseman Infante. Finally, the ninth term saw both sides score a couple of points, one apiece, and Marlins celebrate their 22nd away win of the season. Murphy tripled to left and Cruz scored, but it was all too late as Florida stunned Texas for the second time in three meetings.
Marlins remain foot of the table though, with a .452 percentage which includes 38 wins and 46 losses, the win over Texas being their second in a row and fifth in the past ten games. On the other side, Rangers are first with a .518 percentage which features 44 victories and 41 defeats.
Colorado Rockies 8 – 16 Kansas City Royals
Royals scored twice as many points as Rockies yesterday at the Coors Field where the visitors grabbed one of their biggest wins of the season. The visitors scored their first six points in a row and within the first four terms, only to be threatened with a comeback by Colorado who answered with a five-point trot immediately.
Cabrera hit a 410-foot homer in the first term and another one in the third, being followed by Escobar and Getz who made it 4-0 in the same round. The fourth one saw Royals extend their lead to six points, through Treanor and Moustakas who drew a clear victory. Rockies then powered through to a five-point run, managing to cut the deficit to one point within a few minutes. Gonzalez doubled to center, allowing Wiggiton, Pagnozzi and Spilborghs to make it 3-6. Even more than that, Colorado stunned their opponents with a couple of more points scored by Ellis, who fired a 373 footer, and Moustakas who suggested a consistent comeback.
Unfortunately that was the best the Rockies could do in their attempt to come from behind. Royals then had a tremendous sixth term during which they managed to score five more points in a row. Escobar doubled to right as Moustakas extended the lead to two points. Getz then singled to left, permitting the same Escobar to made it 8-5, while Getz himself propelled the visitors four points ahead.
Royals’ midway rally continued with three more points scored by Cabrera, Maier and Francoeur. Rockies scored three more consolation points in the same sixth round, through Gonzalez, who hit a 364 footer, Wigginton and Spilborghs. Finally, the seventh term saw Kansas consolidating their advantage by scoring four points in a row and clinching their 11th away victory.
Kansas lie foot of the table in the Central with a .405 record which incorporates 34 wins and 50 losses, the win over Colorado being their third in the past ten games. Rockies are third in the West with a .488 winning percentage which features 41 wins and 43 defeats.
Minnesota Twins 9 – 7 Milwaukee Brewers
Twins provided an amazing comeback yesterday at the Target Field where the hosts managed to overcome a 1-6 deficit they had been subjected to after the first four terms. Minnesota opened the score early in the second inning through Thome, who fired a 363-foot homerun, only to be left five points adrift in the next three rounds. Kotsay answered with a 417-foot homerun in the third term as things were about to get very complicated for the Twins.
Gamel then doubled to left, allowing Morgan to bring the first lead for Brewers in the fourth, while Betancourt reached on infield single to shortstop for Fielder’s third point. Finally, Kotsay tripled to right as Gamel and Betancourt suggested a clear win by making it 5-1. Even more than that, Kotsay ended the mid-session with a sixth point scored from Lucroy’s single.
Minnesota broke back immediately through Tosoni, who fired a 356 footer, Thomes and Valencia who scored three points in a row to resuscitate the home side. The fifth term saw the same Minnesota go just one point within their opponents as Cuddyer singled to left for Casilla’s precious point. Weeks replied with a 369-foot homerun, but Twins had to wait one more term to stun the losing pace Brewers and draw the victory.
Thus, the seventh round found Cuddyer singling to left and Revere cutting the deficit back to one point. Milwaukee’s lack of pace allowed the home side score even a winner minutes later. Valencia singled to left, while Mauer and Cuddyer made it 9-7, giving their team a hard-fought late win they didn’t expect to clinch apparently.
Minnesota lie second from the bottom though with a poor .439 percentage which includes 36 wins and 46 losses, the win over Brewers being their fourth in the past ten games. On the other side, Milwaukee remain top in the Central with a .494 percentage which incorporates 45 victories and 40 defeats, the loss the Twins being their 16th on the road and sixth in the past ten meetings.
Oakland Athletics 7 – 2 Arizona Diamondbacks
Bottom Oakland crashed former leaders Arizona yesterday at the O.co Coliseum where the hosts overcame a minimal deficit set in the fourth term by the D-backs. Young brought the first lead and the only one for Arizona in the fourth term after Nadi singled to center, but things were just about to get wild for the Athletics who would provide a seven-point run.
Crisp leveled the scored in the same term following De Jesus’s double to center, while Matsui made it 2-1 right afterwards. The fifth round went scoreless for both sides, while the sixth one saw Oakland score their last points. Jackson hit a 378 footer, while Carter followed him tight afterwards, making it 4-1. Weeks then sacrificed to center, allowing De Jesus put propel the Athletics four points ahead.
Sizemore fired a 378 footer and Pennington scored the last point for the hosts who were already six points clear off their opponents. The seventh term also went dry for the two teams, while the eighth one brought the visitors the last consolation point scored by Upton, following Burroughs’s single to left.
Arizona have conceded their sixth loss in the past ten games, going .529 in the West with 45 victories and 40 defeats. As for Athletics, they are bottom in their Conference with a .447record which includes 38 wins and 47 losses, the victory over D-backs being their fourth in the past ten games, 22nd at home.
Cincinnati Reds 7 – 5 Cleveland Indians
Reds stunned the Central leaders yesterday at the Great American Ball Park where the hosts scored all their points in a row. Indians could only open the score early in the second term and end the meeting with a couple of consolation points. Duncan fired a 395 footer, while Chisenhall followed him right afterwards. The two-point didn’t seem to scare the hosts too much as they broke back immediately through Heisey, who also fired a 377-foot homer, Renteria and Cairo who managed to bring the first lead for the Reds in the same term.
The third term went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one saw the same Cincinnati extend their lead to four points. Finally, Renteria ended the mid-session with a 358 footer hit in the fifth round as Indians could only cut the deficits from then on. Sizemore singled to left, allowing Brantley and Phelps to make it 4-7 in the sixth inning, while Hafner singled for Duncan’s last point in next term.
Despite the loss, Cleveland remain first with 44 wins and 38 defeats, while Reds are fourth in the Central with a .506 percentage which features 43 wins and 42 losses, the win over Indians being their fifth in the past ten games.
