Turkey, Syria and Qatar To Absorb Palestinian Prisoners Deported By Israel
Palestinian Prisoners
The deputy leader of Hamas Musa Abu Marzouk said on Monday that Syria, Turkey and Qatar have already announced their desire to take in the Palestinian prisoners who will be extradited by Israel following the Shalit agreement convened last week by which 1027 Palestinian prisoners will be freed in exchange for Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier captured by Hamas in 2006.
Marzouk spoke only of Qatar and Turkey as country willing to absorb the detainees deported by Israel but Syria has been known to be the third.
The leader of Hamas is expected Monday in Cairo, where he is to welcome the 40 prisoners released by Israel under condition that they don’t go to the Palestinian territories.
According to the spokesman for the military wing of Hamas, Israel and Egypt will meet once a year to review the situation of the deported prisoners. On that occasion the military wing of Hamas downplayed the critics that they were too flexible with Israel, by saying that they have attained 90% of their demands.
The spokesman reminded that initially Israel had said that 260 prisoners were to be deported in order for the deal to be signed, and that the number was significantly reduced. He added that each prisoner who is to be deported along with their families had agreed to the move.
Hamas also came under severe criticism as the most important prisons Israel holds in the Jewish detention facilities were not include in the deal. The critics charged that since the senior prisoners, some of which are serving consecutive life sentences in Israeli prisons, are not on the list, the gain of Hamas is minimum.
Israeli defense ministry announced on Monday that the preparation to release Shalit are completed and that he would be handed over to the Israeli authorities through the agency of Egypt. The exchange will happen on Tuesday.
An Israeli defense official went to that purpose to Cairo to discuss details of the deal with the Egyptian high-ranked officials.
In the meantime, the Israeli citizens who oppose the idea of releasing more than 1,000 Palestinians considered terrorists in exchange for Shalit addressed the Israeli Supreme Court, convened on Monday to address their complaints.
The first part of the swap will happen on Tuesday, at which time 477 Palestinians will be released at the same moment Shalit arrives in Israel. 500 other Palestinians will be released in a second phase, as a token of gratitude to Egypt, whose part in this deal was essential.
It would seem that Israel decided that the relation with Egypt was too important, especially in the context of the Arab Spring, which has reshaped the strategic map of the Middle East. Therefore, Israel offered Egypt, in addition to the release of the 500 Palestinians a formal apology for an incident that happened during the summer at the common border and led to the demise of eight Egyptian police officers.
The Israelis who wanted to complaint against the swap agreed by their government can do so before the first step of the deal is executed.
Four petitions were filed with the Supreme Court by the associations of the Israeli people killed by the Palestinian insurgents, most of which are on the list approved by the cabinet. It is believed that the court will not intervene in a case that is considered of national importance and related to security and political issues.
The newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth ran an opinion poll according to which 79% of the population of Israel was in favor of the deal agreed by the Israeli government.
There are some 6,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, which the Palestinians are considering heroes fighting for the statehood of their territories. It is for this reason that they would receive a hero’s welcoming home.
Some of the prisoners will be taken on Tuesday in the Sinai desert, where they will be trade for Shalit. Others will be taken to the West Bank, where they will be welcomed by the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, a rival to Hamas, which obtained the deal.
Gilad Shalit himself will be taken with an helicopter to a Israeli military base, after which he will be reunited with his family.
