Pirates beat Reds to cement top spot
Pittsburgh have gone .5 ahead of St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers in the Central table after the Pirates beat Cincinnati 2-0 last night at the PNC Park.
The hosts scored the two points within the fourth term. D’Arnaud brought the first lead after McCutchen grounded out to shortstop, while Walker ended scored the second one following Diaz’s sacrifice fly. Pirates have thus secured their leading position in the Conference, the win over Reds being their 24th at home. On the other side, Cincinnati conceded their 27th loss on the road and stay negative this season.

Baltimore Orioles 10 – 15 Boston Red Sox
Red Sox grabbed a massive win last night at the Orioles Park where the East leaders scored 15 points past their opponents whom he finally defeated at the end of a 25-point entertainment. Baltimore took a two-point lead early in the first term, but from then on they could only take a midway minimal lead without being able to preserve it until the end. Lee tripled to center, allowing Jones and Wieters to score the first two points of the clash.
The second term went scoreless for both sides, but the game was far from being a very tight one as things were about to get wild immediately. Saltalamacchia homered a 405 footer in the third round, while Scutaro and Ellsbury put the Red Sox into a 3-2 lead minutes later. Even more than that, the visitors’ run included three more points. Thus, the fourth round saw the same Red Sox improve their rally to a 6-2 comprehensive lead thanks to Crawford, Saltalamacchia and Reddick, who fired a 371 footer in the fifth term.
Baltimore then powered through to a five-point run set in the same fifth term, managing to take the second lead of the game. Hardy, Jones fired a 373  and 441 homers respectively, while Wieters and Lee made it 7-6. But Orioles’ rally could only trigger Red Sox’s late one. Boston stunned the hosts by scoring nine points in a row, something which allowed them to build a consistent advantage and thus draw a clear victory in Baltimore.
Youkilis singled to left as Ellsbury evened the situation in the seventh term. Pedroia then doubled to right, permitting McDonald and Scutaro to build a two-point lead in the eighth, but things went much worse for the Orioles. Ellsbury and Pedroia made it 11-7 following Youkilis’s single to right as things looked clear as possible for both sides. Gonzalez scored the 12th point after Crawford singled to right, while Reddick and Crawford scored the last two points for Boston, following McDonald’s single to left.
Baltimore could only cut the deficits to five points. Hardy singled to left as Bell made it 8-15, and Andino and Hardy scored two meaningless points within the same eighth term. Boston have extended their winning streak to three victories, the one against Orioles being also their ninth in the past ten games and 30th on the road. Red Sox sit 1.5 ahead of Yankees with a .617 record, including 58 wins and 36 losses. Orioles, by contrast, lie bottom of the table with a .409 percentage which features 38 wins and 55 defeats, the loss to Red Sox being their eighth in the past ten games.
Colorado Rockies 4 – 7 Atlanta Braves
Braves won their 27 win on the road last night at the Coors Field where the visitors stunned Colorado thanks to a consistent start which saw Atlanta score first five points in a row. Freeman and Uggla scored the first couple of points as Braves went into an early lead also thanks to a an error committed by first baseman Helton.
The third term brought three more points for Atlanta through the same Freeman, who fired a 446 footer, McCann and Hinske who also hit a 417-foot homerun. Colorado’s first reply came right afterwards through Gonzalez who cut the deficit to four points. Unfortunately, that was just a rare breakthrough form Colorado who were not able to take any lead until the end.
The fifth term saw Gonzalez single to left and Hinkse bring back the five-point lead for Braves. Furthermore, Atlanta made it even 7-1 in the sixth inning through Lowe who scored the last point for the visitors after Freeman grounded into fielder’s choice to second. Colorado then managed to score three points in a row within the seventh term, but the last two rounds went scoreless for both sides as Braves grabbed the victory quite easily.
Atlanta has gone 2.5 behind Philadelphia in the East, with a .594 record which includes 57 wins and 39 losses, the win over Rockies being their second in a row and seventh in the past ten games. As for Colorado, they are third in the West with a .469 negative record, including 45 wins and 51 defeats, the loss to Atlanta being their third in a row and sixth in the past ten games.
Chicago Cubs 6 – 1 Philadelphia Phillies
Cubs shocked the East leaders with a clear win last night on the Wrigley Field where the hosts dominated Phillies at all facets and throughout the entire clash. Ramirez opened the game with a 393 foot homerun, while Lopez doubled the lead for Chicago in the third term, following a sacrifice fly from the same Ramirez. Pena then singled to right, allowing Fukudome to score a third one in the same term.
Phillies’ first and only reply came in the fourth through Rollins who fired a 404 footer. Cubs broke back in the sixth inning when Hill made it 4-1 after Barney doubled to left. Barney extended the lead to four points in the same term, while Pena closed out the win with a 437 homer one round later.
Despite the win, Chicago remain second from the bottom in the Central with a .402 percentage which features 39 wins and 58 defeats, the victory over Phillies being their fourth in the past ten games and just 22nd on Wrigley. As for the leaders, Philadelphia are top in the East with a .621 record which includes 59 wins and 36 defeats, the loss to Cubs being their 21st on the road where they remain positive though (25-21).
Houston Astros 2 – 5 Washington Nationals
Washington have finally switched positive after defeating Astros last night at the Minute Maid Park. After a four-inning drought, Washington first broke the ice in the fifth term through Morse who homered to left, putting his side into a minimal advantage the hosts managed to overcome minutes later. Corporan doubled to right as Michael leveled the score in the same inning. Lee then doubled to left, allowing Sanchez to bring the first lead for Houston.
However, things got back to normal in the seventh term when Zimmerman replied with a 368-foot homerun for a 2-2 even result. The eighth inning went scoreless for both sides as the game seemed very tight at one point. But still, the last round saw Washington build the victory and score three more precious points. Zimmerman singled to right as Bernadina made it 3-2. Finally, Nix singled to right, while the same Zimmermann and Morse gave their side a hard-fought win, Nationals’ 20th on the road.
Washington have gone .500 this season, including 48 wins and 48 losses, the victory over Houston being their fifth in the past ten games. On the other side, Astros lie foot of the table in the Central with a .323 record, the worst in the league, which features 31 wins and 65 losses, the defeat to Washington being their second in a row and eighth in the past ten games.
Tampa Bay Rays 4 – 5 New York Yankees
Yankees edged Rays yesterday at the Tropicana Field after being led 1-4 at one point in the second round. A late comeback which saw Yankees score four points in a row saved them from a potential disaster which could have dropped them well behind leaders Red Sox. New York opened the score in the first inning through Granderson who brought the first lead after Cano grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop.
But things were about to get complicated for the visitors who would concede four points in a row. Longoria doubled to center, allowing Damon and Zobrist to bring the first minimal lead for Rays in the same first inning. Even more than that, Tampa Bay managed to go two points ahead right afterwards thanks to Longoria who made it 3-1 also following a throwing error committed by pitcher Brunett.
Chirinos then suggested a clear victory for Rays, making it 4-1 in the second inning, but the next innings provided an outstanding turnover which highlighted Yankees scoring four points and conceding zero. Teixeira reached on infield single to second, allowing Gardner to cut the deficit to two points. The sixth and seventh innings went scoreless for both sides, while the eighth one brought a couple more through Swisher and Cano. Finally, the last inning brought the winner for New York as Martin walked and Granderson made it 5-4.
Yankees remain second in the East with a .602 record, including 56 wins and 37 losses, the victory over Rays being their third in a row and sixth in the past ten games. As for Tampa Bay they remain third, well behind the Yanks, having gone .532 this season, percentage which features 50 wins and 44 defeats, the loss to New York being their third in a row.
