India Seeks To Play Major Role in Post-war Afghanistan
Afghan President and Indian PM
A second U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue is about to be held in New Delhi, the capital of India, in which the theme of the drawdown from Afghanistan of the United States troops is expected to be as important as the tragic blast on July 13 in the financial capital of Mumbai.
India invests $1.5 billion in developmental assistance of the neighboring Afghanistan, which makes it a serious player in the country’s economy.
It also contributed substantially to the training of the Afghan security officers and public servants.

Afghan-Indian Relations
The reason India seems so interested in developing a serious relation with Afghanistan is that it wants to make sure the country does not fall under radical Islamic rule as soon as the Americans go out, and that it does not fall under the influence of Pakistan, India’s archfoe.
Afghanistan could also become a bridgehead toward the Central Asian countries, which would favor India’s economic ties.
As U.S. begins the drawdown of its troops, India fears that her investment could be at risk, especially if the Taliban regain power.
The Taliban power could galvanize the Islamic radical groups in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, and also in the Central Asian countries, thus blocking its path to sources of energy.
All these reasons made Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh affirm that India may renounce its opposition to all kind of reconciliation with the Taliban, and open to all kinds of solutions to protect its interests.
In December India was popular among Afghans in spite of the mistakes made during the Soviet occupation in the 1980s.
