People Protesting in Front of Presidential Palace
Police in Cyprus announced they arrested some 200 people after a demonstration caused by the terrible explosion at a naval base, as a result of which 12 people lost their lives earlier this week.
The police announced on Wednesday that the arrests were made on Tuesday night as the demonstrators tried to breach the gates to the presidential palace.
The people were accusing the authorities of criminal negligence that led to the explosion of gunpowder at the naval base. They threw rocks, flares and molotov cocktails at the police, which responded with tear gas. Five police officers were slightly injured.
Funerals are being held on Wednesday for eight of the 12 people who died in the accident, including the chief of the naval base.

The blast created grave problems for the power plant in the region, causing some institution in the entire island to reduce their electricity consumption, including the two airports.
As a result of this the defense minister and a military chief have resigned their stations, being asked by the president of the country to remain in office until replacements can be found.
The explosion on Monday brought back into discussion a scandal in the past years, when a Russian owned ship transported under Cypriot flag more than 3,000 cases of high explosive from Iran to Syria.
The explosive was apprehended by the American authorities which suspected that the ammunition could go to the Gaza Strip, to the Islamist group Hamas.
It was stored in Cyprus, because it was unloaded from a ship under Cypriot flag, and it was deposited in the naval base, where it remained until the explosion on Monday. Investigators ruled out the possibility of sabotage, and negligence was the cause established at the end of investigation.
