France Celebrates National Day, Worst Losses In Afghanistan Since 2008
Bastille Day
As France is celebrating national day with military parades and discourses in the capital city, Paris, and impressive displays of popular attachments to the nation’s values, the president Nicolas Sarkozy delivered a speech before parade in which he referred to the involvement of the country in the conflict in Afghanistan.
Sarkozy promised that new measures would be deployed to ensure the security of the French troops fighting in Afghanistan after the worst one-day loss in human lives since 2008.
On Wednesday, five French soldiers and an Afghan one were killed, and four troops were injured north east of Kabul, in a suicide bomb on a meeting of village leaders.

Another French soldier was killed on Thursday, thus bringing the number of French troops killed over the last week to 7.
Sarkozy convened a meeting with senior security advisers to find a way for France to deal with the resurgence of Afghan terrorism.
Speaking after a meeting with the injured soldiers at Percy, Sarkozy said that the actions in Afghanistan now are diversified, and require new types of response, and new safety measure.
Sarkozy stressed out though that even so, this does not alter the plan of France to withdraw from Afghanistan 1,000 troops next year, and a total drawdown by 2014, in consistency with Obama’s plan to pull American troops from Afghanistan by 2014. there are 4,000 French troops in the Asian country.
The troops that are more likely to come back first are those who were sent at the request of the Pentagon to supply the already existing troops in the field.
Since 2001, when France first contributed with troops in the fight against terror, 70 French troops have lost their lives in Afghanistan.
