Candidate Vs Candidate Vs Candidate
Only a month ago, all the Republicans who gathered in New Hampshire for a debate had only nice things to say about each other. Former Massauchssets governor Mitt Romney stated that any of the present people would serve as a better president than Barrack Obama.
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum said that it is a great field of candidates.
John Huntsman, former Utah Governor, stated that he has great respect for “fellow” Republican candidates. John Huntsman joined the race a week later.
Well, apparently not only the summer is heating up. The sniping amongst GOP candidates seems to increase in …heat.
Considering that Romney is poll leader everywhere while Rep. Michelle Bachmann suddenly represents a threat in Iowa, Republicans that have been working on engaging in the race feel the need to take down some of the GOP competition.
Still the tone isn’t as harsh and as accusing as it will turn with next winter’s campaign, but is certainly no longer soft, despite the fact that jabs are seemingly more passive aggressive.
For example this weekend’s stroke and poke between Tim Pawlenty and Bachmann. Pawlenty stated that he likes Congresswoman Bachmann, that he has campaigned with her and that he respects her but when it came to accomplishments within the Congress, Pawlently said that Bachmann’s accomplishments are “nonexistent”. He also stated that a leader needs more than speech capabilities, he/she also needs to have to power to “lead a large enterprise” and be able to finalize it. Pawlenty claimed to have achieved that, when Bachmann did not. That wasn’t exactly the nicest thing to say was it?
Congresswoman Bachmann who’s currently leading Pawlenty despite his attempts to “conquer” Iowa, stated that instead of focusing on negativity, she’d rather focus on her successful endeavors and accomplishments. Then she gave quite a list of achievements in Congress.
Huntsman also claimed to remain above such disputes stating that he doesn’t feel the need to tarnish someone’s reputation to run for president. He also emphasized the importance of civility among candidates and refused to criticize fellow Republicans. Yet this week he felt like playing coy, by comparing Romney’s record as Massachusetts governor versus his record as Utah governor. He also claimed that the comparison between the state of Utah and Massachusetts was purely random. Should we believe him? I think not.
When Romney countered stating that he created almost 50.000 new jobs in Massachusetts, Huntsman added that only Ohio, Michigan and Lousiana were that low.
As we can all see, it turned into a game of “he said that, he said that”.
In the meantime, Santorum attacked Huntsman by displaying a clip with a motorcyclist flying through the air and then hitting the ground, while flashing the words “hasn’t signed the anti abortion pledge”. This was clearly an attach toward Huntsman’s love for motorcycles.
What a kick start to the campaign isn’t it?
