Although smaller new born babies pose problems, being born heavier than normal is not always good
Although weighing less than it should is always bad for a new born baby, it seems that weighing more than the normal weight is also highly problematic.
According to a new study, in the United States of America there are more and more children who are born with a greater weight than they should be. One baby that was born in Texas weighed about 16 pounds at birth. Is that healthy? Researchers answered that questions and it seems that bigger is not always better when it comes to new born babies. According to Dr. Kristin Atkins, a specialist in maternal and fetal medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, it seems that the obesity epidemic that has swept the whole country left its mark on new born babies as well.
Aside of the fact that heavier new born babies may have abnormally thick heart muscles, they may also face problems at the delivery, as being too large does not help them at all. It seems that the baby’s shoulder can get trapped under the mother’s pelvic bones and that may “assure” some damage in the neck nerves or his arms. An as if that were not enough, according to another researcher involved in the study, Dr. Salih Yasin, it seems that the brain of the baby may also be affected.
According to the researchers, the fault seems to be represented by the fact that these children are born out of mothers who have gestational diabetes. Given that the main nutrient that controls a baby’s growth is the sugar and given the fact that mothers who suffer from diabetes have high levels of sugar in their blood, the baby grows in an abnormal way. Moreover, given that babies are accustomed to a certain amount of sugar when they are in the womb, once they are born, the situation changes and their main source of sugar is cut short. Thus, they end up by having the need to be monitored closely after the birth. As you can imagine, these babies are at high risk of developing conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart problems in their future. Plus, there’s also a risk for the mothers who give birth to such large babies, as they can get injuries such as tears of the vagina and the rectum, after delivering.
According to Yasin, all the things happen because the United States has been facing problems related to the obesity rates and more and more people are overweight. Thus, a mother who is obese has greater risks of developing this condition called gestational diabetes in comparison to women who are not overweight or obese. The trick it, specialists say, not to gain more than 10 pounds during pregnancy, in order to avoid any type of problem that may appear on the way.
