The “great successor” in NKorea, Kim Jong-eun, the presidential son, viewed the father’s body on Tuesday. The state television, which announced the demise on Monday morning, presented Kim Jong-eun in front of a glassed coffin which contained the remains of his father.
The new leader of the Communist dictatorship was accompanied by senior government and military leaders, and conducted a solemn ceremony by which the people expressed their grief at the loss of the “beloved leader.” People were shown collapsing in the streets with grief at the word abot the leader’s death.
Kim Jong-il ruled NKorea for 17 years since his father Kim Il-sung died at the age of 82. Kim Jong-il died of a heart attack on Saturday. He had been known to have serious problems, though the Western countries couldn’t have specified what kind of disease he was suffering from.
The news about his demise placed South Korea in a state of alert because the North and the South are technically at war since 1952. Even so, people in South Korea are said to have gone about their lives as if nothing has happened.
Seoul is now preoccupied with maintaining a stability and avoid any sort of trouble, as it remains unknown how the new leadership would be structured.
Kim Jong-il promoted his son last year, during a congress of the political party, Workers’ party. On that occasion, Kim Jong-eun, the third son of the deceased president, educated in Switzerland and virtually unknown in his own country, was presented as a general of the army.
The military is very powerful in NKorea, and its support is crucial for the new leader. The fact that he was presented to the political body as a military means that he has their benediction to succeed to his father.
Even so, it is still difficult to ascertain whether he will impose his will on the military leaders or will be a mere puppet in the hands of the military.
It is also unknown what will become of the NKorean nuclear program. During his last days alive, Kim Jong-il displayed a determination to tackle the matter, and even called for the resumption of the six-party-format talks about the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
