Berdych, who has not won a title this year, broke the German three times only in the opener, missing at the same time two other chances. The second set saw the same Czech control the term and even keep the sheet clean. Berdych held all his serves and broke his opponent three more times, clinching the victory in nearly one hour.
The Czech finished the game with a 45 first serve percentage, four aces and three double faults. Tomas also won 61 percent of return points and 71 of service ones, compared to his opponent’s poor 29 return percent. Kohlschreiber left with three aces, double faults and a break, leaving the tournament earlier than expected.
Berdych has also improved his head to head record with the world number 52 to 6-1. His previous victory dates from this year’s Australian Open. World number ten Czech had previously ousted Jurgen Melzer and is to meet another tough opponent, Fernando Verdasco, who edged Falvio Cipolla in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Spaniard, who had previously ousted Michael Llodra, needed one hour and 45 minutes to beat the Italian who created him a lot of trouble especially in the first half which saw Cipolla crash the world number 23. Cipolla broke Verdasco three times in the opener to suggest another impressive day. The Spaniard also stole a service from his opponent but could only save two out of five break points from the opposite side.
But the second set saw new look Verdasco break the Italian twice and also give him no chance to build a break point chance, leveling the score in just over half an hour. Finally, the third set brought Verdasco a couple of more breaks and Cipolla zero opportunities, something which helped the Spaniard win the game very easily despite the very slow start.

Said Verdasco after the game: “He was a player, I had never played before. It is always tricky at the start, when you are trying to figure out his strengths and weaknesses. I didn’t start playing well and made too many unforced errors. In the second set, I played with more spin and didn’t take as many risks. I came back and in the second and third sets.”
On the second half of the draw, Mikhail Youzhny passed yet another Spanish test after beating Feliciano Lopez in three tight sets, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. But Youzhny’s reply came as just. The Russian started the second set with much more confidence, leaving the Spanish player two games adrift after just a few minutes. Youzhny broke Lopez twice and managed to keep his service sheet clean throughout the entire round, pushing the match into a third set decider.
Youzhny was very close to losing the game at one point in the third set as the Russian allowed Lopez to break him twice. Fortunately, Mikhail survived a midway scare, clinching the victory thanks to a third late break which propelled him through the best eight term.
