World champion Sebastian Vettel has won the ninth title of the season after coming first at the Singapore Grand Prix. The German stopped the clock at one hour, 59 minutes and 6,757 seconds, being followed by Jenson Button and Red bull team mate Mark Webber.
Button set a 1,737 second gap against the leader, while the Aussie was 29,279 seconds slower than the champion who is very close to defending his title. Former world leader and defending champions in Singapore Fernando Alonso came fourth, nearly one minute behind the winner, having McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton behind him. Paul Di Resta impressed with a sixth position, bringing Force India 12 precious points.
Seven other drivers finished the race with one lap left, including Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez from Sauber. Kamui Kobayashi finished 59 out of 61 laps, the same as Renault’s Vitaly Petrov. Finally, Jaime Alguersuari, Jarno Trulli, Michael Schumacher and Timo Glock did not finish the race.
Said Vettel after the win: “The car was amazing and the start was good… I was just pushing as hard as I could from the beginning, trying to open the gap, trying to use my momentum and get into the rhythm as quickly as I could to make use of the advantage of a clear track ahead. Statistically the chances are on our side (to finish the year first).”
Vettel is now very close to winning the second championship title. If the German finishes the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix on one of the first ten positions he will retain the title, his second straight of career. The 24 year old driver leads the world standings with 309 points, being followed by Jenson Button with 185.
Fernando Alonso sits just behind the Briton with 184 points but also has Mark Webber two points behind him. Lewis Hamilton is fifth with 168 points, Felipe Massa sixth with 84 and Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher on the next positions with 62 and 52 points respectively.
Vitaly Petrov sits ninth with 34 points, the same as his team mare from Renault Nick Heidfeld who is just behind him. Adrian Sutil, who won four points in Singapore climbed 11th, one point above Kamui Kobayashi.
Paul Di Resta, who won eight precious points on Sunday, is 13th with 20 points, being followed by Jaime Alguersuari with 16 points and his Toro Rosso’s team mate Sebastien Buemi who has won 13 points so far this season. Mexican Sergio perez lies 16th with nine points and Williams’ Rubens Barrichello is five points behind him. Finally, Bruno Senna and Pastor Maldonado are the last to have won points this year.
Concerning the team table, Red Bull are top spot with 491 points, being followed by McLaren with 353 and Ferrari with 268 points. The Austrians won 40 points on Sunday in Singapore, while their main followers 28 and 14 respectively.
Mercedes is fourth with 114 points, Renault fifth with 70 and Force India, who won 12 points in Singapore, are sixth with 48 points. Sauber, Toro Rosso and Williams are the last teams which have earned a few points this year, while Lotus, HRT and Virgin remain scoreless.
Next up is Japanese Grand Prix which is scheduled to take place between October 7 and 9.
