Watching Susan Boyle singing in duet with Elaine Paige is what a dream coming true looks like, considering that first time she appeared in front of Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan and Simon Cowell the forty-seven unemployed with a golden voice said she had been dreaming about being like Elaine Paige.
And so she did. The truth is that Elaine Paige is known in the United Kingdom, in the United States and maybe in a few European states, but it is possible that few people would know her in distant parts of the world, like Africa, or Latin America.
Conversely, every single person across the world that has ever logged on a computer with Internet running on it could see Susan Boyle magnificent ascension. Even the Pope in Rome was given the privilege of listening to her when he came to the United Kingdom. The way I see it, it is Elaine Paige who should be honored to sing along such a vivid talented person as Susan Boyle.
This kind of pursuing a dream and going far beyond it can only happen in countries that live by the rule of fair play, and strongly believe in giving everybody a fair chance in life. It takes an open mind and a free spirit to be able to see talent and encourage it where no one had ever dared to dream it existed.
A few years ago the idols of showbiz decided to come down from Olympus, and allow themselves the pleasure of living among the mortals, attempting to elevate some of them to their rank.
This is how shows like Britain’s Got Talent, or America’s Got Talent, or Germany’s Got Talent, or any national version of this program, can be construed. What else is having David Hasselhoff appreciating you and screaming from the top of his lungs of joy after a breathtaking performance?
What else is performing in front of famous Sharon Osbourne, wife to the no less famous rock singer? Or Brandy Norwood, or Jerry Springer, or Kelly Brook?
Since 2006, when the first series was launched in the United States of America by the NBC channel and then, after a year, in the United Kingdom, and in other countries of the world, the talent scouting show has proven one of the most successful reality shows in the history of television, if not the most successful.
Thousands of people enlisted to show the judges, and possibly the world, what they are capable of. Singers, dancers, gymnasts, circus performers, joke tellers, prodigious kids, genius elders, athletes are among the people who came in front of the camera.
Some of them were not able to prove their talent was big enough to propel them into the heartless world of showbiz. They went back home to train some more, and then they came to stand in front of the jury again.
Some of them, however, launched excellent careers in their field of endeavor, becoming famous singers, or entertainers, or athletes.
America’s Got Talent or Britain’s Got Talent are living prove that there is a huge potential among the people and that what we call now stars are not necessarily the best in their field but only talents with a better management.
The most brilliant example of the success the show format has throughout the world is no doubt the Susan Boyle case.
Susan appeared on television for the first time in her life on April 11, 2009, when she sang in front of the audience and the judges I dreamed a Dream, from the soundtrack of the famous film Les Miserables, inspired by Victor Hugo’s book.
In November the same year, Susan Boyle was already releasing her first album, which was the number one best-selling CD all over the world. This kind of success outweighs the dreams of many of the renowned stars in the music industry.
In 2010, Boyle released an album of Christmas songs, called The Gift. Her fame is so big that she is already creating her own contest, the winner of which is granted the privilege to sing along with her in a duet.
The third album, Someone to Watch Over Me, is expected to win the hearts of the audience as soon as it is released, that is anytime this autumn.
Such a tremendous success in such a short time can be understood only by taking into account the combination between sheer talent, which Susan Boyle has in incredible amounts, and the modern technology, which allows the distribution of this talent rapidly everywhere on the planet.
The recording of Boyle’s first appearance in front of the judges in 2009 was seen on Youtube by 2.5 million people in the first 72 hours. Millions came after, as the stage performance was fascinating, and continues to fascinate through its mise en scène. 75,751,444 have watched so far on Youtube her first appearance. Magic!
The Huffington Post reports that the producers had anticipated the huge impact of this appearance, and therefore they presented Boyle in such a way that the initial reaction be triggered. Boyle was laughed at, when she got on the stage, as Piers Morgan acknowledged soon after she sang the last notes of the song, she was regarded with compassion and distrust, as Amanda Holden recognized when she spoke about this incredible performance, and was anticipated by Simon Cowell, who boasted about it after the performance, stirring ironic laughter.
The amazing disproportion between her house-wife-like dull initial appearance and the voice that could easily place her among the best mezzo-sopranas in the history of music was speculated by the talented television show producers, showing that it is not only the talent that counts, but also the marketing of it.
The Entertainment Weekly and The Herald said that Boyle’s performance was a reminder that talent exists even though it is not accompanied by good looks. These magazines said that her success was a victory of talent over the tendency in our world to associate talent with good appearance. Amanda Holden said it was “the biggest wake-up call ever.”
Her fame was so quick and so deep that reference to her are already found in different popular shows in America and the United Kingdom.
One of the most fascinating performances at the America’s Got Talent, its first edition, was Taylor Ware, a smart 11-year-old young Tennessee yodeler, who fascinated the audience and made it to the final.
In 2007, she released the album America’s Yodeling Sweetheart. She said she taught herself how to yodel from an instruction book and a tape. Her talent is so remarkable that she is sure to make a very interesting career in country music.
A most impressive performances on America’s Got Talent was that of the Canadian Russian Bar Trio, which gave the people thrill, and enchantment at the sight of beautiful and gracious Christine Bedard jumping up and down on a four-inch wide flexible bar.
After her performance, David Hasselhoff, who had the excitement of his live watching and cheering for her, said that the Russian Bar Trio was better than the teams at the Olympics. He was right. Christine Bedard had it in to challenge and to win whatever great gymnast in the world, all-time famous Svetlana Khorkina included.
The talent of archery Moldavian-born Lilia Stepanova displayed and her body’s flexibility took the breath away of all those who watched her. Her capacity to shoot arrows with her feet makes her one of the most famous contortionists in the world.
Watching Jeremy Lynch mastering the soccer ball, even the world’s all-time greatest Brazilian soccer player Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, also known as Ronaldinho Gaucho, could learn a trick or two.
A fascinating performance in such a show was offered by Romanian-born Bogdan Ota, who qualified for the higher stages of the Norske Tallenter 2011 (Norway’s Got Talent 2011).
Ota left Romania and emigrated to Norway in search of a better life. The show made his known as an exceptional piano player. Some consider he is one of the most outstanding musical geniuses.
If it weren’t for this show, he could have ended up gutting fish in the fish companies of the northern European country. He is expected to win the entire world with his amazing talent. He sure won the public in the country he comes from.
We can go on for days as thousand of talented people go on stages and prove that the talent pool is practically everflowing. All it takes is a smart way to make it work.
For me, Susan Boyle’s first appearance is an astounding moment in time. It is the anthem of success. It is prove that opportunity could present itself at any time in life and all it takes is to take it. In a world where everything seems so unfairly distributed, this is a message of hope making life worth living.
