Guangzhou final.
The seventh seed Scheepers had a bright week in China during which she managed to pick big wins over first favorite Maria Kirilenko and Urszula Radwanska. It took the 27 year old Scheepers one hour and a half to capture her first success of career. She took the first lead thanks to a couple of breaks which propelled her four games atop of the Slovak who was denied two break points in the opener.
As for the second set, it saw the same African rally past her opponent whom she broke a couple of more times, without giving her any chance to steal a service. Scheepers thus closed the game earlier and easier than expected to power through a well deserved title which could have been the third one for Slovak, though.
Chanelle won 62 percent of first serve points, 66 of service ones and hit a couple of aces. She also set a 50 return percentage and committed two double faults, compared to her opponent who came up with a poor 39 first serve percentage and a 34 return one.
Rybarikova, who played her first final of the year, won at the same time 50 percent of service points and committed a double fault. The head to head series between the two have now gone 1-1. Slovak’s only win comes from the 2009 Birmingham event.
Said Scheepers after the big success: “I don’t remember much about the match point. I was so in the moment. I know it was a long point, but it seemed so long ago. I was fighting every match - all of them were difficult in their own way… All of my other matches were tough, but today was the day it all clicked.”
En route to the final, Scheepers ousted top seed Maria Kirilenko in a three setter which the South Afircan won at the death, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, Urszula Radwanska 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarter finals, Su Wei Hsieh 3-7, 7-6, 6-1 in the second term and Anastasija Sevastova 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in the opener. Practically, she dropped one set per game and grabbed the easiest win in the final.
On the other side, Rybarikova had previously eliminated Jie Zheng 7-5, 6-3 in the final four term, second seed Jarmila Rybarikova 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter final, Aravane Rezai 6-4, 6-1 in the second round and Hill Craybas 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the first day.
