Milwaukee Brewers left it late against Florida Marlins whom the Central leaders beat 4-1 yesterday at the Miller Park to clinch the Conference title.
After a first term drought, Brewers were given the first lead by Fielder who hit a 411 foot homerun in the second term. The third inning also went scoreless for the two sides as the hosts seemed to have a hard time against the Marlins who leveled the score in the fourth round. Petersen singled to center allowing Sanchez to even the situation.
Florida managed to preserve the result until the eighth term when Brewers came up with a triple provided by Braun, who hit a 431 foot homerun, hart and Morgan. The last term went blank as Milwaukee were celebrating the title in front of a 45,000 warmly crowd.
“I think for me honestly, I live for that moment. You play the game to have the opportunity to play meaningful games down the stretch in September. I truly expected to come through in that situation,” said Braun after the win.
Milwaukee are top spot with a .586 record which includes 92 wins and 65 defeats, the victory over Florida being their seventh in the past ten games and 53rd on the road. They have also qualified for the playoffs. On the other side, Marlins lie foot of the table in the East with a .452 record including 71 wins and 86 losses. The defeat to Brewers was their sixth in the past ten games and 41st on the road where they have just switched .500.
Houston Astros 11 – 2 Colorado Rockies
Houston grabbed their second straight win over Colorado whom they thwarted yesterday at the Minute Main Park where the hosts have started to build a tiny streak, but also where Rockies dropped to a nine loss one. The visitors picked the first lead early in the opening term through Young Jr. who scored the first point after Fowler doubled to center, only to be leveled minutes later by Shuck who closed the gap following Sanchez’s double.
Even more than that, Astros, who would score nine other points in a row, were given the lead in the same first round by Sanchez and Martinez who scored a double for their side after Lee doubled to center. Things got even worse for the away side when Lee made it 4-1 on Downs’s double.
Moreover, Downs scored a fifth one after Johnson singled to left to end the first term rally which had already suggested a bright showing for the hosts. The three innings saw the same Astros score a couple of more points through Sanchez, who extended the lead to five points following Martinez’s double, and Shuck respectively, who made it 7-1 after Lee singled to left. Sanchez brought an eighth point for the hosts after Downs grounded into fielder’s choice to third.
Myers scored his first point in the fifth term after Lee grounded out to first, having Shuck to third and Martinez to second. Finally, Barmes closed the early run with a 352 foot homerun, which also was the first one of the meeting. Rockies’ second reply came late in the seventh inning through Nelson who fired a 400 foot homerun for an eight point deficit.
Shuck brought his side the clear win in the same inning after Sanchez grounded out to shortstop. Houston remain foot of the table in the Central with a .350 percentage which includes 55 wins and 102 losses, the victory over Colorado being their fifth in the past ten games and 30th at home.
As for Rockies, they have dropped to a .446 record featuring 70 wins and 87 defeats. The loss to Astros was their ninth in a row and 44th on the road.
Texas Rangers 5 – 3 Seattle Mariners
Mariners have conceded their second straight loss when they were defeated by leaders Texas yesterday at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington where the away side could only cut deficits and where the hosts scored all their points in succession, within the first four terms.
The first round went blank for the two sides, while the second one saw Rangers start their early run. Beltre hit a 409 foot homerun, involving Young in a first double which brought the home side a comfortable advantage. Hamilton then fired a 452 footer for a three point lead, while Gentry, who also hit a homer, and Cruz made it 5-0.
Both sides kept the sheet clean in the fifth inning, while the sixth one saw Seattle come up with a three point rally. Liddi cut the deficit to four points after Suzuki singled left and Gimenez got to second. That was Mariners’ only momentum, one they could not convert into a consistent play. Gimenez scored his first point after Ackley hit a sacrifice fly to center, with Suzuki getting to third and Robinson to second.
Finally, Suzuki had the last word, making it 3-5 on Olivo’s sacrifice fly. The next three terms went scoreless as Rangers were celebrating their 50th home win. “It’s very exciting. We took care of business like we needed to. It’s kind of the culmination of a great year and it’s fun,” said David Murphy after the game.
Detroit Tigers 4 – 3 Baltimore Orioles
Yesterday’s meeting between leaders Detroit and Orioles needed 11 terms to provide the winner. Guerrero doubled to right in the opening term, allowing Hardy to bring the first lead for the away side. Detroit replied with a double right afterwards. Cabrea fired a 428 foot homerun, while Jackson overturned the result.
Orioles broke back in the third inning when Andino evened the situation following Markakis’s sacrifice fly and Hardy made it 3-2 on Witers’s singling. The fourth term went scoreless for both sides, while the fifth one saw the same hosts leveled the score through Peralta who pushed the game further in the night.
The last four regular terms as well as the first extra round also went blank for the two sides as the game remained opened to any result. Tigers finally picked the win in the second extra inning when Martinez singled to left and Worth made it 4-3 with Cabrera getting to second.
Detroit remain top spot in the Central with a .580 percentage featuring 91 wins and 66 defeats. The victory over Orioles was their sixth in the past ten games and 46th at home. Baltimore, by contrast, lie bottom in the East with a .420 record including 66 wins and 91 defeats. The loss to Detroit was their third in the past ten games and 50th on the road.
Washington Nationals 4 – 7 Atlanta Braves
Washington ended their impressive recent run when they were defeated by Atlanta last night at the Nationals Park. Atlanta scored their first three points in succession and within the fist term. Prado brought them the first lead after Uggla singled to center, while Jones doubled it right afterwards on Freeman’s singling.
Wilson then got safe at second on an error committed by Zimmerman, which also allowed Uggla to make it three with Freeman getting to third. Nationals’ first answer came in the second term through Espinosa who closed the gap to two points after Ramos singled to right.
The next two terms went scoreless for both squads as Braves were comfortably heading towards a clear win. They were given three more points in the fifth inning through Bourn who made it 4-1 on Uggla’s double, and Jones and Uggla respectively who made it six following McCann’s double.
Washington threatened with a late comeback after scoring three points in a row in the sixth and eighth rounds. Morse scored the second point for the hosts after Werth singled to center, while the same Weth made it 3-6 after Ramos reached on infield single to shortstop.
Werth then hit a 414 foot homerun but Nationals were still kept two points adrift of the visitors. Finally, Jones grounded into fielder’s choice to pitcher in the last round allowing Bourn to close the meeting with a seventh one.
Braves are second in the East with a .567 percentage featuring 89 wins and 68 defeats. The victory over Washington was their fifth in the past ten games and 42nd on the road. On the other side, the capital are third with a .487 percentage featuring 76 wins and 80 losses. The loss to Atlanta was their third in the past ten games and 36th at home.
Pittsburgh Pirates 4 – 3 Cincinnati Reds
Pirates edged Reds yesterday at the PNC Park where the hosts grabbed a hard earned late win. Pittsburgh were first given the lead in the second term when Jones, who hit a 453 foot homerun, and Doumit scored a double for their side. McCutchen made it even three in the third term, following Doumit’s singling.
The fourth inning went scoreless for both teams but the fifth one saw Reds build a three point run. Volquez cut the deficit after Votto doubled to left, while Frazier put his side one point behind them in the sixth inning. Both sides kept their sheets clean until the ninth inning when Phillips threatened with an extra inning after leveling the score.
But a late momentum helped Pittsburgh to close the clash earlier than Reds expected. Ludwick singled to center and D’Arnaud scored the winner at the death. Pirates lie second form the bottom in the Central with a .446 record including 70 wins and 87 defeats. The victory over Reds was their third in the past ten games and 35th at home.
Cincinnati are third in the Central with a .484 percentage featuring 76 wins and 81 defeats, the loss to Pittsburgh being their fifth in the past ten games and 42nd on the road.
San Diego padres 0 – 2 Los Angeles Dodgers
Dodgers have started to build streak when they blanked Padres yesterday at the Petco Park where the away side grabbed an early win. Sands brought the firt lead for LA in the second term after Mitchell grounded out to third, while Kemp closed the game with a 428 foot homerun hit in the seventh round.
Dodgers are third in the West with a .506 record which includes 79 wins and 77 defeats. The victory over San Diego was their second in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 37th on the road where they still remain negative, though, due to 38 losses. As for Padres, they are foot of the table with a .433 record featuring 68 wins and 8 defeats. The defeat to Dodgers was their fifth in the past ten games and 44th at home.
