Inter new coach following Gian Piero Gasperini’s sacking. The 59 year old Italian manager has been appointed amid this week and is likely to make his debut with the Nerrazzuri tomorrow when the former champions face Bologna on the road.
The 53 year old Gasperini only spent three months with the Giuseppe Meazza side with which he both lost the Italian Super Cup and led to three official defeats. Under him, Inter has only won one point so far this Serie A season after a scoreless draw against AS Roma. The former European champions have also made a terrible UEFA Champions League debut, being beaten by Turkish side Trabzonspor on Meazza.
The 1-3 loss to newly promoted Novara forced the club board to sack the coach on Monday with Caludio Ranieri taking over. Ranieri is at his eighth Italian side as he joins Inter after a poor season with AS Roma whom he failed to lead through the UCL superior phases. His has been offered a two season deal at Meazza whom he must lead back to the top of the standings.
Ranieri made his first official training session yesterday in Milano and will be on the side’s bench on Saturday in Bologna. “Claudio Ranieri is officially the new coach of Inter. Ranieri has signed a contract with Inter until June 30, 2013,” Inter statement read.
Said Ranieri after being appointed: “There has been a lot of bad luck, misfortune and injury, now we have to regain our confidence and self-esteem and try and pick up some points. It’s the beginning of a new path; to win here with Inter would be splendid: a year and a half ago these lads were champions.”
Few of the most remarkable honors Ranieri has won so far include the UEFA Super Cup won with Valencia back in 2004, which also is his most recent success as manager, a Copa del Rey, as well as the Intertoto Cup with the same Spanish side and the Italian Super Cup won with Fiorentina.
He has also coached Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Parma, sides with which he did not win any notable honors. Inter lie third from the bottom in Serie A, having been beaten even by their Italian Cup final opponents Palermo. Inter meet CSKA Moscow next Tuesday in the second term of the UEFA Champions League group stage, while the first big test for Ranieri will come on October 1 when Inter host last term’s revelation and great shaped Napoli.
