Defending champion Rafa Nadal has secured a berth into the US Open semi finals when the Spaniards eased past Andy Roddick in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 to meet Andy Murray in the final four term.
The second seed converted six out of seven break points in front of the American who failed to convert any of the four break points. Nadal needed nearly two hours to oust Roddick past whom he hit 35 winners. He also finished the game with a solid 67 first serve percentage, 13 unforced errors and a 50 return percentage, compared to his opponent’s 59 first serve percentage, 25 unforced errors, 15 winners and a poor 25 return percentage.
Nadal provided a very solid return play in the opener, managing to win two out of two break points and kept the sheet clean on his service. As for the second set, it looked much easier to grab for the same Spaniard who improved his receiving play to three breaks. Finally, the third term brought him one more break, sufficient for a clear win in front of the 21st seed.
Said the former world champion after the game: “I think I started the match really well with some very good points, few very good passing shots. I think he was tired because the match of yesterday. You know how tough it is to play best of five two days in a row, and he played against very difficult opponent like David Ferrer yesterday.”
The head to head series between Nadal and Roddick have now gone 6-3 to the 25 year old who had previously defeated the American at the last year’s World Tour Finals in London. Roddick’s last win against the Spaniard comes from the 2010 Miami Masters.
Next up for Nadal is Andy Murray who has also secured a berth into the semi finals. The Scott beat the second American remained on course John Isner in four sets 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. Murray broke the American just twice in five tries, saving at the same time five out of six break points coming from the opposite side.
Murray, who still lacks a Grand Slam trophy in career, won 68 percent of first serve balls, hit 47 winners and fired 14 aces past his opponent who came up with a 67 first serve percentage, 55 winners, 54 unforced errors and a poor 27 return percentage which cost Isner a big win.
The Scott needed nearly three hours and a half to book his spot into the final four, being two wins from his most important life event. Murray also reached this term’s Australian Open final, but lost to eventual world number one Novak Djokovic.
He also beat Isner for the second time the head to head series going 2-0 to the 24 year old who had previously upset the Atlanta winner at the 2010 Australian Open. Murray will meet Nadal for the 17th time, the direct confrontations being led 12-4 by the Spaniard who last defeated Murray at this term’s Wimbledon Grand Slam.
This will also be their fourth meeting of the year after Motner Carlo and Roland Garros events. Nadal has won all the clashes with Andy and will start tomorrow’s game as favorite. Scott’s last win over the former world leader dates from the 2010 Toronto Masters.
En route to the semi final, Nadal has picked straight set wins against Andrey Golubev in the opener, Nicolas Mahut in the second round, David Nalbandian in the third one and Gilles Muller in the fourth one. On the other side, Murray started the US Open with a three set win over Somdev Devvarman and had some hard life against Robin Haase in the second round.
Fourth favorite Murray needed five sets to oust the Dutch who could have provided one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. In the third round he beat Feliciano Lopez in three sets, while the next term brought him yet another easy win against Donald Young of United States.
Concerning the first half of the draw, world number one Novak Djokovic is to meet Roger Federer in the semi finals. Fortunate Nole has secured a semi final berth after his compatriot Janko Tipsarevic abandoned the game at 6-7, 7-6, 0-6, 0-3 down. The head to head series between the two conationals has now gone 3-0 to the 24 year old who teams Tisparevic in Serbia’s Davis Cup squad.
Djokovic will next face Roger Federer who beat Jo Wilfried Tsonga in three easy sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in what was a sweet revenge for the 30 year old Swiss who lost the previous meeting with the French in Wimbledon. Federer broke Tsonga six times in 13 tries and conceded two services.
He also finished the game with a 72 first serve percentage, 30 unforced errors, 29 winners and a 45 return percentage, compared to Tsonga whose showing included a poor 53 first serve percentage, 34 unforced errors, 17 winners and a 33 return percentage.
The Swiss improved his head to head record with the 26 year old to 5-3. That was also their fifth meeting of the year which brought Tsonga two wins in Wimbledon and Montreal.
Federer will meet Nole for the 24th time, leading the direct confrontations 14-9. Swiss’ last win comes from this year’s French Open, while Serb’s last success dates from this term’s Indian Wells. This will also be their fifth meeting of the season with Djokovic leading the meetings 3-1.
On his way to the semi final, Djokovic has grabbed three straight sets against Carlos Berlocq, Nikolay Davydenko and ALexandr Dolgopolov.
