Milan started the new season with a 2-2 draw against Lazio last night at the San Siro where all the four goals were scored within 20 minutes.
Lazio got into a two goal lead thanks to Klose and Cisse, only to be leveled in the next ten minutes. Rossoneri came from behind and evened the situation through Ibrahimovic and Cassano, without being able to go atop of their opponents. Newly arrived Aquilani got the first big chance of the meeting. The former Liverpool player was picked inside the box only to be denied by keeper Bizzarri in what should have been an early opener.
Lazio broke back immediately through Mauri whose dangerous cross failed to meet unmarked Klose. The cross followed a superb action directed by Rocchi who beat three marks before feeding Mauri on the right. Klose opened the score in the 12th minute. Bizzarri’s long ball met Mauri on the right who beat his mark and picked the German striker inside the box from where the newly transferred put it into the far post past Abbiati.
A childish defending from Nesta and Gattuso allowed Cisse to get man to man with Abbiati whom the left striker couldn’t beat from good position. Gattuso then left the pitch, being replaced by Dutch Mark Van Bommel in the 18th minute.
Three minutes later Lazio made it 2-0 after a patient combinative play on the right the finish of which saw Cisse head it into the top right corner past freeze Abbiati. Edoardo Reja’s side couldn’t keep the consistent advantage but ten minutes as Milan closed the gap to one goal in the 28th minute. A lamentable defending from Lazio allowed Aquilani and Cassano to beat all the marks and Ibrahimovic to put it home from close range into the empty net.
Even more than that, Rossoneri made it 2-2 just three minutes later through Cassano. Milan won a corner on the right the striker converted into a leveler with a perfect header into the far post. Lazio were very close to taking back the lead in the 37th minute but Hernanes mocked a golden chance. The half time went 2-2 as the game was still looking tight.
Two minutes into the second part Cassano missed a big opportunity, striking it just wide from the edge of the box. Lazio’s Dias was then cautioned with a yellow card for a foul on Boateng. AC Milan mocked two back to back occasions in the 64th minute in what should have brought them at least one goal. At first Cassanoi picked Ibra who hit the post and then Biazzarri denied Boateng’s powerful shot at the dearth.
Lazio replied with a dangerous action created by Cisse who beat all his marks only to be blocked by Nesta who saved his side from a potential disaster. Massimiliano Allegri replaced Aquilani with Antonio Nocerino in the 69th minute, while Pato replaced boating with 15 minutes left. Marui departed with a yellow card for time wasting and Senad Lulic replaced him with ten minutes remaining.
The last big chance belonged to Ibrahimovic who failed to convert a powerful strike from dangerous position. Finally, Reja replaced Hernanes with Matuzalem in the 87th minute as the scoreboard remained unchanged until the final whistle.
AC Milan coach Allegri looked pleased with his side’s showing although they could only grab one point at home. “We had a difficult start, but we reacted well. We started very badly and Lazio deserved the lead, but then we had a good reaction and in the second half we created many opportunities to make goal and we deserved the victory. It is hard to find the rhythm in the game when you have not been playing as much.”
Milan will next meet Napoli while Lazio host Genoa on September 18. Until then, Rossoneri will also play FC Barcelona in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Italians visit Camp Nou on Tuesday in what is expected to be one of the tightest meetings of the night.
