Former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn appeared on Monday in front of the cameras and addressed the people in his country in an interview that was expected by most and left the most with the distinct impression that France must move on without him in the period to come.
Speaking about the event that meant the end of his political career, DSK said that the encounter with Nafissatou Diallo, the housekeeper at the Sofitel hotel, was a “moral failing,” but that there was no violence involved in it. He mentioned that he was sorry for the way things turned out.
The incident on May 14 that led to his arrest brought him charges of sexual assault and the dismissal from the position he had with the IMF. Later the American prosecution decided to drop the charges fearing that they may lose in court a case against him with a witness like Nafissatou Diallo, whose background comprised a series of crimes such as prostitution, false statements, lying to the authorities, and many others.
Since he has been released and then allowed to leave the US, DSK returned to France, where he was accused by a French woman of having attempted to rape her in 2002, when he was a member of the National Assembly.
One of the most important consequences of this arrest was that he lost his chances as candidate to the presidency of France. Before this scandal broke out he was considered as the most likely candidate to win the next presidential elections, which compelled many to think that it was the incumbent president of France who had something against him and framed him.
Other conspiracy theories consider that he got close to a terrible secret of the United States, that is, according to a report of the Russian foreign intelligence, he discovered that the Americans had no longer their gold bars in the Fort Knox.
The interview DSK offered drew about 13.4 million viewers, that is one fifth of the population of France, and 47 percent of the audience share.
The rivals and the lawyers of the housekeeper criticized him for failing to give a correct account of what happened in that hotel room. Diallo, who is determined to bring a civil suit against him, said that he assaulted her as soon as she entered the room to clean.
Members of conservative party considered his performance laughable and sad, and said it was time to turn the page, and so said even some of his Socialist fellows. Segolene Royal, who is seeking the party’s candidacy, said that by his performance today, DSK closes a chapter in the history of the country that should have been closed a long time ago.
