AC Milan 3-1 at home on the San Paolo stadium.
Rossoneri opened the score early in the tenth minute through newly arrived Aquilani, only to be leveled two minutes later by Walter Mazzarri’s side. Cavani scored all the three goals for the hosts, finishing the game with a hat-trick which propels him top of the top-scorers’ table in Serie A.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side scored the first one through Aquilani who beat keeper De Sanctis with a superb header from 16 yards or so following a perfect cross from the right. Milan neared the second one just one minute later when Cassano was blocked by the visitors’ defence at the death in what could have been a two point lead.
Three minutes later Cavani leveled the score with a superb shot from inside the box. Napoli won a free kick on the right which Rossoneri cleared as far as the striker who beat Abbiati from a pretty tight angle into the near post. De Santcis provided a providential save in the 18th minute, blocking Nocerino at the death to keep the sheet clean.
Cavani missed a great chance in the 20th minute. Dossena beat his mark on the left to feed unmarked Cavani inside the box from where he was denied by a vigilant Abbiati. The 36th minute saw the Napoli forwarder complete his double with a screamer from the left side of the box straight into the near post through keeper’s hands.
AC Milan broke back immediately through Aquilani who was perfectly played by Cassano only to hit it straight at the keeper De Sanctis. The former Liverpool player mocked yet another golden chance one minute later, missing the target from a free area. The half time went 1-1 as Napoli were still chasing their second one.
Eight minutes into the second part Cavani made it 3-0 with another tremendous shot from 16 yards. A cross from the right was poorly cleared by Nesta who ‘served’ the striker back for a lovely finish into the right hand post. De Santcis saved his side form a second goal in the 64th minute after a dangerous action created by Seedorf.
Cassano picked Pato with a perfect cross the Brazilian failed to convert from inside the box in the 70th minute. On the other side, Abbiati denied Dzemaili’s kick to give his side one more chance to break. Finally, Pato mocked a second big opportunity with four minutes later. The Brazilian’s first touch was blocked by Aronica who secured his side the comprehensive win.
Napoli remain top spot in Serie A with six points, the same as Juventus, Udinese and Cagliari. As for Milan, the champions are 17th with one point won in two games. Mazzarri’s side will next meet Chievo away, while Rossoneri will chase their first win of the season against Udinese whom they meet next Wednesday at San Siro.
Said a disappointed Allegri after the game: “We have suffered under their counter-attack, which is in their characteristics, we had to stop them. We have made mistakes, we have paid a heavy price, but I’m content with those who took to the field tonight, because they did well… Milan dominated possession, we made the game, but this is something that does not count today.”
AC Milan finished the game with four yellow cards conceded by Antonini, Nesta, Nocerino and Pato, while Napoli picked three through Cavani, Gargano and Aronica. Both coaches made three changes with Mazzarri introducing Zuniga, Dzemaili and Pandev for Hamsik, Lavezzi and Dossena.
