World champion Caroline Wozniacki has triumphed for the fourth time in New Haven when the top seed battled back against Petra Cetkovska whom she defeated 6-4, 6-1 in the last term.
The 21 year old Wozniacki needed one hour and 20 minutes to seal her sixth title of the season, breaking the world number 40 six times of 12 tries. Cetkovska, who was making her first final appearance of the year, had a much better start, going 4-0 ahead of her opponent in what seemed to be yet another poor showing for the Dane.
The Czech broke Caroline a couple of times in the opener, only to be stunned by an impressive rally from her opponent. Wozniacki won six games in a row to clinch the opener at the death. She then continued to look as a top seed, leaving the 26 year old five games behind the second set thanks to three more breaks which helped her to ease past her opponent and confirm the expectations.
Wozniacki won 67 percent of service points, 63 of return ones and hit 31 winners, compared to her opponent whose showing included a poor 37 service percentage, a 33 return one and just 17 winners. Cetkovska had a much more solid first serve play, but that was not sufficient to stay in touch with a leveler.
“It was important for me to start well in the second set. I just wanted to get a bit of a lead. Then I kept my focus and didn’t let her back in,” said the Dane after the game. “It’s a great tournament for me. I love being back here, I said it before. I still can’t really believe I’ve been here four times already. I definitely feel like I’m hitting the ball well. I’m on a good roll. I’m looking forward to the Open.”
En route to the final Wozniacki had defeated Francesca Schiavone 7-6, 6-3 in the semi final, Christina McHale 7-5, 6-3 in the quarters and Polona Hercog 6-3, 6-0 in the debut. She thus finished the week with the sheet clean, something which must give her a lot of confidence for the upcoming US Open Grand Slam.
As for the Czech, Cetkovska had previously defeated this year’s French Open winner Li Na 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 in the final four term, Mario Bartoli 7-5, 7-5 in the quarter final, Agnieszka Radwanksa 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round and Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-2 in the opening day.
For this performance, Wozniacki will receive a $103,000 check and 470 points WTA, while Cetkovska is to pocket $55,000 and 320 points. The Dane has already lined up to the next week’s US Open, being drawn as top seed. She will meet Spain’s Nuria Llagostera in the first term. Cetkovska is on the same half of the draw, being expected to face Evgeniya Rodina in the first term.
