Liverpool upset Bolton Wanderers 3-1 to go top of the standings at least for one day.
Henderson brought an early opener for Kenny Dalglish’s side, while Adam scored the third one just eight minutes into the second part. Skrtel also had his name on the scoreboard, scoring the second one for the same Reds. On the other side, Klasnic brought a late consolation for Bolton, making it 1-3 just before the final whistle.
Liverpool first broke in the ninth minute when Downing was blocked at the death by Paul Robinson while getting ready to pull the trigger. Just seven minutes later, Henderson brought the opener for the Reds following a tremendous action developed by Suarez and Downing. Bolton’s first clear opportunity came in the 20th minute through Petrov whose volley was tipped away by a vigilant Pepe Reina who managed to keep the sheet clean despite being blinded.
Kuyt, who played the entire 90 minutes, first tried his luck three minutes later. Henderson beat his mark to play the Dutchman in good position, only to finish it poorly. Henderson then served Suarez with yet another tremendous pass which put the Uruguayan face to face with keeper Jaaskelainen who denied the striker with a super intervention.
Wanderers’ first move came in the 27th minute with Mark Davies replacing Fabrice Muamba. Three minutes later Skrtel replaced Kelly for Liverpool in what would prove to be an inspired change. Kuyt got his second chance four minutes before the half time, the Dutch being picked by Suarez, but also denied by the same Jaaskelainen.
Bolton were the first to receive a yellow card through right defender Steinsson who was cautioned in the 44th minute for a foul on Downing. The half time went 1-0 as Reds were still looking good, while their newly arrived Henderson even better.
The second part started with yet another yellow card taken by Klasnic for his sins on Lucas. But just six minutes into it, Liverpool were given a two goal lead by Skrtel who headed a perfect corner from the right past the Bolton keeper, grabbing his first goal of the new season. One minute later, things looked much worse for Owen Coyle’s side who were downed 3-0.
Kuyt drove the ball for 15 yards or so and picked free Adam on the edge of the box from where the new signing thundered it through defender’s legs and into the right hand post. A fourth one could have come right afterwards, but Jaaskelainen denied Suarez for the third time. Coach Coyle then replaced Chris Eagles with Tuncay, but the visitors’ play did not improve too much.
Ten minutes later Darren Pratley replaced striker Kevin Davies as the game was still being dominated by the hosts. Dalglish introduced Andy Carroll and Maxi Rodriguez for Henderson and Suarez in the 76th minute. Finally, Klasnic scored the last consolation following a poor defending from the Reds. Carragher’s mistake allowed the Bolton player to put it home from close range.
“We’re delighted. I thought we played really well, passed and moved and I think we thoroughly deserved the victory. Everybody who came along to watch will have been very well entertained by the performance of the players… Both Jordan and Charlie will get a lot of satisfaction from their goals, but they’ll get more satisfaction from the victory,” said a pleased Dalglish after the win.
