World champion Sebastian Vettel finished the Spa qualifying first to grab his ninth pole position of the season after a tight race which saw Lewis Hamilton crash Pastor Maldonado in the last seconds. Vettel set a one minute and 48,298 second best time, being followed by McLaren’s driver who came the second fastest.
The 24 year old Vettel was behind the Briton most of the time, but will have the 2008 champion on the second position on Sunday’s race. Red Bull have captured their 13th straight pole position and will also be chasing their ninth title in Belgium. Hamilton set a 0,432 second gap against the German, and will have Mark Webber alongside him.
The Aussie was the first to set a 1+ second gap, while Felipe Massa was just 0,880 seconds slower than him. Mercedes, who had set the best times in the first free practice, will have Nico Rosberg on fifth position, having set a 2,254 second gap against Vettel. The qualifying also included three surprises as Jaime Alguersuari of Toro Rosoo and Renault’s Bruno Senna will start on sixth and seventh position respectively, while former world champion Fernando Alonso, who has only won a title so far this season, will start on eighth.
He was nearly three seconds behind Vettel on Saturday which followed a performance set in the second practice. Sergio Perez came ninth and Vitaly Petrov, who had failed to shine during the practice sessions, came four seconds behind the leader.
Another surprise was provided by Jenson Button who set the 13th best time. He will have Sebastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi ahead of him on Sunday, so he will be expected to fight hard for a tenth position.
Williams’ Barrichello was 19,051 seconds behind Vettel, being followed by Adrian Sutil of Force India and Pastore Maldonado who was penalized five places due to the Hamilton crash. Heikki Kovalainen set a 20,056 second gap, while Paul di Resta, Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock will start on last positions.
Michael Schumacher, who had come the fastest in the first practice, also crashed his car after damaging one of his wheels. “I’ve had some experience on three wheels before but to lose a rear wheel is a bit more difficult to handle. Initially I didn’t know I’d lost a rear wheel. There is no reason to blame anybody, we all try our best but at the end of the day we are all humans,” said the 42 year old veteran.
The same weekend, Mark Webber was given an extension at the original contract, his new Red Bull deal running through the 2012 season. Webber’s best season performances include a second place in Turkey and five three places.
His team mate Vettel has won six titles so far this season grabbed four second places and came fourth in Germany.
