Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids as a military settlement, Meknes became a capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672–1727. Located 130 km from the capital Rabat and 60 km from Fes, Meknes has been called the Versailles of Morocco, but the grand scheme for a royal palace was never completed. Today the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was an impressive city in Spanish-Moorish style, surrounded by high walls with great doors, where the harmonious blending of the Islamic and European styles of the 17th century. Today the city is the centre of a productive area, producing olives, wine, cereal crops and citrus. Meknes is a jewel that any serious traveler who visits Morocco should not miss, it really deserves a visit – the size of the Imperial City will impress any visitor. Especially because it is the Imperial Capital with less tourists.
The major attraction include Bab Mansour, named after the architect, El-Mansour. The design of the gate plays with Almohad patterns. The marble columns were taken from the Roman ruins of Volubilis. The gate itself is now used as an arts and crafts gallery; entry is by a side gate. Another point of interest is Dar El Makhzen palace erected during the rule of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672-1727). Most of the monuments in the medina can be visited on foot, but distances are quite big.
