The Radisson SAS Hotel, situated in the historical center of the
Berlin – directly across from the Berlin Cathedral, impresses its guest with a enormous aquarium placed in the hotel’ lobby. Once you enter the hotel, nothing prepares you for the sight of the giant aquarium towering in the center of the lobby. Actually, this is the largest cylindrical aquarium that ever built in the world.
Built on a 9 meters tall concrete foundation at 25 meters tall and 11 meters wide, AquaDom Lobby aquarium contains one-million liters of saltwater and some 2600 tropical fish of 56 species maintained by the Sea Life Berlin Aquarium located next door to the hotel.
The outside cylinder was manufactured onsite using 4 pieces by Reynolds Polymer technology the same material used in the massive aquariums at Dubai’s Burj al Arab. Guests and visitors are able to travel through the aquarium in a glass-enclosed elevator to reach a sightseeing point and restaurant under the glass roof. Two full time Scuba divers are responsible for the care and feeding of the aquarium and its inhabitants, and one can often see them swimming around in full scuba gear with the fish as an added attraction.
Construction of the AquaDom was no easy feat; the pieces of acrylic were crane lifted into place during the construction of the hotel itself, as the rest of the hotel was gradually being built around the tank. The AquaDom was opened in December 2003 and the estimated cost of construction of the AquaDom is said to around 12.8 Million Euros. Many of the suites in the hotel have been designed to provide views of the aquarium – a sort of ocean view with a difference.
