Preliminary Draw – World Cup 2014 in Rio de Janeiro

This coming Saturday July 30th at 3pm, the entire attention in the world of footballwill be directed towards Rio de Janeiro. This is the date chosen for the preliminary draw for the World Cup that the FIFA is organizing for 2014 in Brazil. The Preliminary Draw is the first major event scheduled to take place before the World Cup.
The guests, who come from all over the world will gather in the harbor of Marina da Glória, in the Guanabara Bay of Rio de Janeiro. There they will attend the Draw, which will define which countries will play against which for qualifying for the World Cup to be played in Brazil in 2014.
From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, a total of 203 nations will be involved in the event. Since Brazil is hosting the event, it classifies automatically for the World Cup and, therefore, it will not take part on the draw. The nations of Bhutan, Guam, and Mauritania opted out and will not participate in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while Brunei must comply with the suspension imposed by FIFA and is not allowed to compete in the qualifying tournament.
The number of vacancies per continent remains the same. There is no change in the distribution of places for participating in the World Cup of 2014 in Brazil. In this sense, the FIFA Executive Committee confirmed already in early March that Europe will have 13 representatives, while Africa may participate with five nations. South America and Asia will receive 4.5 vacancies each, while the region of North America, Central America and the Caribbean will have 3.5 participants and Oceania must work for making its 0.5 present.
In all cases where there are 0.5 vacancies, these will be awarded after playoffs between those who are next on the list for classifying in each of the areas having these halve-vacancies. Thus, for example, it is often the case that the country who ranks 5th in South America has to play against the one ranking first in Oceania, and then only the winner of those two countries participates in the World Cup.
There will be a change, however, in the way these play-off clashes are organized and how who plays against who is defined. The draw for the play-offs will take place during a press conference after the meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Brazil 2014 World Cup scheduled for this Friday July 29, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro.
Thus definitions will take place for four confederations. The format and requisites for qualifying in South America are already confirmed; since Brazil does not have to take part on the eliminating competition previous to the World Coup, the remaining nine countries will compete for the 4.5 positions available for the continent in the 2014 World Cup.
The first round in the South Pacific region has also been confirmed. With the exception of New Zealand, all countries in the region will take part on the South Pacific Games, an event that takes is scheduled to take place in New Caledonia in the coming month of August.
However, the draw for the qualifiers for the other four confederations will be held in Brazil. The format of these preliminaries has already been ratified by the FIFA Executive Committee at a meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland, on May 27.
